Can I switch outsidelip frame window screens to regular window screens

I have “outside lip frame window screens” and I hate them they are impossible to remove and equally as hard to get back in. Most likely they were all made incorrectly as the company that installed my windows is out of business now. My question is can I have regular window screens made or am I stuck with “outside lip frame window screens” as in my windows require them. I went to a local window screen repair place and the guy there said my windows could only have “outside lip frame window screens”. I hardly think he’s an expert, I didn’t even show him a picture of my window and seemed like he just wanted me to go away lol. Any advice would be great, thank you I’m advance.

This is one of those times where there isn't a right or wrong answer, but you might consider these things.... 1. Convenience. Is it a simple thing to remove and store the screens? The least expensive fix, but also the most work. 2. Replace them with half screens, as eteinne mentioned, but that's an expensive fix. Half screens allow the natural light in on the upper half of the double-hung windows and you still have the protection of the screens on the bottom. Our home had half screens on it when it was built and the second year we lived here we had them replaced with full screens. The setting sun (most of our windows are on the west side of our home) is brutal in the summer and we needed the extra protection provided by full screens, but also made them UV filtering screens, which are very dark. 3. This is my personal favorite... Leave the screens, which is an economical and convenient fix - as well as providing an additional layer of protection - and add full spectrum lights/lamps to the rooms you think you'd like more natural light. Full spectrum lights are used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD) through the use of "light boxes" that mimic natural sunlight, especially beneficial for those living up north. -Grainlady Here is a link that might be useful: Verilux Full Sprectum Light

sorry - here they are. the first one shows what most of the windows in my house look like (aluminum frame only, storm windows and screen removed), followed by a close up of the gap & dirt that collects. final shot shows one of a few windows that still has storm windows (ugly blinds & my husband's antenna don't help matters). thanks.

If these are vinyl windows some of the cheaper brands dont fit tight against the sill and dont have good weatherstripping. If they are full screens you try putting a strip of pile weatherstripping there . If they are 1/2 screens you cut a piece of pvc to fit in the screen track to hold the screen down and tight. It should be cut so it fits snuggly into the track.

I’ve never heard of this natural crown. Most companies by lineals that are long and straight then cut to size. Naturals crowns are not supoose to be there not would I consider them part of the design . IMO it would be characteristic design of a week sill and unwanted but not always a 100% avoidable. Sometimes this can happen when the sill of the existing frame is high in the middle and the window is installed directly on top and not shimmed on the outside corners. I put a staight edge on the sill of my lowest line of windows and my high end , both are straight., Any bowing is gonna come from install IMO. I agree msnufactures can be cheap and the screen is often overlooked . The screen frame itself is subseptible to bowing if screened to tight and I prefer one that has latches to hold it down tight and reqiures a separate motion to release. I have requested this feature to my manufacturer more than once to no avail. If manufactures are humping there sills in purpose they should incorpate a pile weatherstipping or katch that draws it down tight. I would try pushing down in the screen frame corner before anything else as it is the easiest and often works.

Does your question pertain to the positioning of the actual screen? It looks like you have sliding windows where the screen is outside in that smaller channel. That is just how all sliding window screens are positioned (to the outside). If the screen was on the inside, you would have to remove the screen to get to the handle to slide the window open and then reattach the screen and usually there is nothing to the interior in which the screen "sits".

It's possible you could MacGyver something if you are handy or have someone come out and install a retractable screen to the interior. Let me know if I have addressed your issue.

We have the same type of screen on one sliding window. It is very difficult to remove/install the screen due to tight fit in the slot and the spring action of the screen. What happens if you hold your screen up against the outside of the window? Could you see installing angle clips on the outside like an old screen door?-

From what I understand there are 2 types of screens, regular screens that you can buy in home depot, Lowe’s or any other hard wear store and an outside lip screen which is what I have that came with the windows. The outside lip screen gets measure differently that a normal screen gets measured if you were having one made. My question is could I just use a regular screen that sits inside the window channel. I’ll include a spec. Picture of what a lip frame screen looks like.

You can try cheap window and door screens on this col site: buycheapproductsonline I got my window screen there and bought the window screen repair tape for my door screen .lol You don't need to do anything ,just cut and paste the window screen with strong adhesivewhich willl only take 15 mins.
