I hate white kitchens?
Comments (70)Well since I am already sooooooo far out off the original topic about white kitchens, I'll just tell you all how my sitch worked out :). I went in this morning with my attitude totally turned around, which was good because I was in a VERY bad, angry state before my gardenweb-induced epiphany. And whaddaya know, the first person in my office today was one of the colleagues I was mad at, who came to tell me she and her assistant were desperately trying to do what was needed to get the program accomplished on the original deadline! Then I spoke individually to my other colleagues--the ones I thought were ignoring me--and each was cooperative and very relieved at my idea of postponing the program. Finally I met with my boss. I was able to go in with a genuinely positive attitude as well as a workable solution. He signed off immediately on the change I proposed and we're all good now. Really, it is amazing how good this group is at sharing wisdom. I truly thank you all. Ann...See MoreWhat I hate most about my kitchen
Comments (58)#1: The total lack of water pressure at the sink, and that it has to run for several minutes before you can get any hot water. The lack of a sprayer -- but that would also require better water pressure. #2: The chipped, stained, enameled cast iron, 46-year-old double sink. Impossible to clean completely, not big enough to wash the roasting pan or the stove burners (enameled cast iron that would come clean if I could soak them, impossible otherwise). #3: The inadequate lighting. #4: The beat-up lower cabinets, whose veneer has delaminated from the plywood along the bottom. #5: A wall oven in the corner with wall cabinets nearby that prevent anyone from standing in front of the oven. We've been removing hot, heavy casseroles and roasts from the side for 46 years now. Think it's too soon to change? The good news is we can work on problems 1-3 without a huge, extensive remodel, and will be doing so this summer. The beat-up cabs will be easier to live with when sink work goes faster......See MoreI hate my stainless steel appliances!!!
Comments (133)You GO, @Kathy Linn! I resolved early-on in our kitchen design to adopt a "no-stainless" policy (more for the looks than the upkeep), and so set out to find an antique, enameled stove (for cleanability in addition to looks) and even went with copper sinks to avoid SS. My first kitchen was all-white when we bought the house, and not really in a good way - laminate countertops and mdf cabinets in addition to white appliances. It was more work keeping the countertops white than the fridge (although the door handle did yellow with time) but I was done with white by the time we moved. For our build I settled on a 1929 Glenwood, restored at a shop outside Boston. It was a splurge but like yours (which is also very handsome) one we'll never need to replace. I'd like to think if consumers start throwing the SS junk back in appliance companies' (and designers') faces and going with restored antiques or otherwise reliable, easy-to-clean appliances with actual color options that we don't have to replace after 5-10 years, maybe they'll stop telling us what we should want and start producing quality again....See MoreI hate the finish on my new kitchen cabinets
Comments (20)yalemichmom, fortunately my contractor was very accommodating and did not resist when I said I wanted to hire my favorite painter for walls and trim. I selected and purchased the paint myself and the two professionals were able to schedule work around each other. I wonder if your contractor would consider this. As my architect said, "It's your house and you are writing the check." I think you will be fine with the factory-finished crown, as long as it is the same throughout the room. Kendrah, "too much of a hardened, baked on look that made it feel too sleek and modern for the space" is exactly how I feel about my cabinets. live_wire_oak, thank you for the detailed explanation of coatings. Love the car analogy! It isn't actually the sheen of CV that bothers me. I couldn't find the correct word to describe what I dislike. It's what Kendrah said. I elected to go with CV for durability and the expense of hand painting. In hindsight, I wish I had chosen unfinished cabinets painted on site (with Advance) by aforementioned favorite painter - even knowing it is more fragile and will require periodic repainting. The one thing I appreciate about CV is that inevitable drips of coffee do not stain the cabinet fronts. Mary Elizabeth, lighting does make a difference. The color bothers me less in dim early morning/late evening light. It's daytime, when the inalterable sunlight comes streaming in that I wish I'd chosen something with a little more chroma. All, thanks again for your thoughtful comments....See Moreloobab
