Change the door between the house and the garage?
Comments (6)The door jam is either fabricated for the present door or it came prehung as a unit. It is highly unlikely that a new steel door will line up with the existing hinges on the present door jam and most often steel doors come prehung on a metal frame. You can purchase wood doors and mortice them to match existing hinges on the wood frame. You can't do that with a metal door. Also, the metal door will more than likely be thicker than the pine door so it probably won't fit the frame regardless....See MoreRemove Window to Improve Kitchen Layout?
Comments (103)"...do y’all think it would make sense to put a small prep sink centered under the single window? that would really perfect the ice-water-stone-fire situation. I like the idea of being able to fill pots, drain pasta, rinse veggies, and thaw frozen stuff on that stretch of counter, where I imagine most of the prep work is going to happen. Any reason this is a bad idea?" This is what you're proposing. You'll have very little counter between prep sink and range so you'll end up prepping between sink and fridge, facing a wall and not family and friends seated at the peninsula. Is that desirable to you? wilson853 pointed out the other issue for me: adding a prep sink reduces the amount of cab storage you'll have. Designing such a wide U kitchen wastes a lot of potential storage and counter space, IMO. I think your kitchen will function as if it were much smaller than it is. I think someone above suggested expanding the kitchen even more into the laundry room, which would allow you to add a decent sized island between the main sink and the fridge. Like this: The range, sink, DR and fridge stay in the same configuration as in your plan. However, I shifted the fridge wall into the laundry room about 2 feet, making room for an island (est about 55" long) with a prep sink between the two arms of the U. The island would be similar to this: I moved the pantry from the hallway to the kitchen. It would be similar to this: Even though I stole some space from the laundry room, it's still a good size with approx the same amount of storage and counter space because I used the space more efficiently. For instance, I eliminated corners and stacked the washer and dryer. I moved the washer and dryer to the interior wall (dryer venting will run in the joist space). I made good use of the machines' depth by spec'ing shallow floor to ceiling storage next to them in the laundry room and a shallow utility closet in the back hallway. This creates a "wall of tall" on one side with a long stretch of counter opposite it. You can add upper cabs if you need additional storage or leave it open. Spec water hook-ups and drain, as well as dryer vent to the side of the machines. This will make it easier to reach the water valve if you ever need to turn it off in a hurry as well as hook up the dryer vent (hard to do in an alcove as I've designed). This isn't quite the same set-up but it shows you shallow shelving next to machines recessed so hopefully it helps you understand what I'm suggesting. Here's how that "wall of tall" might look. You could also do a shallow closet instead of cabinets next to the w/d like this: I can't determine dimensions for the laundry area but I hope that there's at least 36" between W/D and counter edge. 42" would be better. One last thing. Because I moved the kitchen wall and entry to the left, I moved the powder room door around the corner. You might be able to keep it where it was but there's not enough detail on the plans to know if that's doable....See MoreLaundry room/log home: drywall paint color, garage door paint/stain?
Comments (7)Oh, I agree...no fun to make decisions under pressure, but it feels like thats been the story of this build...Ive learned so much and it feels like 80% has been under a deadline...so am considering trying to figure out the paint stuff tomorrow-or at least take a guess...the walls are so small it wouldnt take much to repaint if needed-Thanks so much for the suggestions of those colors...I just looked them up--I really like both of them. They do look clean/fresh. The laundry room will basically be filled up with the rustic hickory cabinets (lowers along the sink wall- a silgranite sink (blanco laundry sink) which I'll need to choose a color for as well---thinking something of a medium to darker shade just b/c it will be easier to keep clean), & then upper cabinets on the washer/dryer wall) with a quartz countertop (doing granite in kitchen, but figure quartz will be easier to maintain in laundry room)-color tbd...that will take up the log/sink wall and the right/garage door wall....the opposite 'longer' wall we are planning to build a bench/cubbies 'mud room' type piece that will run along that wall...perhaps paint/stain that. There will be a light (pendant or semi flushmount) over the sink, and a flushmount mid room in front of the washer/dryer-oil rubbed bronze and frosted glass. I was also thinking about putting some simple, maybe live edge shelves to the left and right of the window, or maybe those could have some color too. We're doing most of the finish work ourselves & are both working full time--nothings been ideal about this build & I know I should have these things picked out by now- this is my first house I've even owned (I've always rented & have moved A LOT-so maybe have painted a wall or two, but never had the opportunity to design/paint/etc anything from scratch...its a gift, a challenge, and outside my comfort zone all at the same time. :)...See MoreImprove curb appeal of garage prominent house and hidden front door
Comments (13)The only construction change I would make is to box in the stone posts. To my eye they look very odd - just random shapes of stone glued onto the posts. Larger light between the garage doors. Good ideas above. I would just paint the garage doors and trim, not add fancy windows to them. You want to draw attention to the right side of the house, not draw attention to the garage doors....See MoreD M PNW
