Needing a good sliding patio door...
Comments (45)We will replace 2 sliding glass doors (72"x80") with metal frames, likely original to our 49-yr-old house, because they've fogged and one is hard to move. Our contractor recommends Viwinco and the distributor he sent us to seconded that and showed an S-Series unit (vinyl clad exterior & interior) with Northern Zone glass pkg. We also looked at Anderson Narrowline 200 Series. Is Anderson worth the additional cost? Online I read mixed reviews of Viwinco, all at least 5 years old, along with recommendations for Sunrise (no local dealer in NE Pennsylvania) and Okna. Okna is carried by big box stores but I don't know what model to look for. At our "advanced age," we don't know how long we'll remain in the house. What do you recommend?...See MoreWhy are slide in options so less common than freestanding?
Comments (19)When I bought a new range and refrigerator about a year and a half ago for my unremodeled kitchen, I decided to switch from a free standing to a slide in. I have a rather temporary black piece of metal behind the range to cover the gap, but it blends in perfectly with the black top. At the time I decided a smooth top electric was the best option for us since I was not ready to convert to gas without proper ventilation and a full remodel. I too was disappointed with the number of options for a lower-mid priced slide in range. I think as others have stated that most builder-grade and older homes have space for free standing ranges. The average homeowner seems mostly interested in gas vs electric and stainless vs black or white rather than free standing vs slide in. I think perhaps the average homeowner may not even know or care about the differences between a slide in and a free standing range. I too liked the easy cleaning factor I assumed I would have with the slide in. To an extent I avoid the crumbs and grime between the countertop and range, but I do still have a slight gap under the lip of the slide in that I must clean. I also like the sleek look of the slide in range without the lip / backsplash on the back of the range. I wish there were more slide in options available, but I imagine manufacturers are targeting the majority of the market....See More3" high threshold lip on impact sliding door causing everyone to trip
Comments (57)I live in Arizona. I’m currently having a new home built and just had my 8’ sliders installed in one guest room and master bedroom. The sill on my sliders is about 1 1/2 ~ 2” and I have kicked it several times now. Was just wondering today why is it so high? My contractor for my foundation told me I would have ALL level Entryways going from outside to inside and vise versa.. therefore myself or anyone else would never have to worry about tripping over any threshold.. I definitely have two tripping hazards! I will be contacting my foundation contractor first I guess.. hhhmmm...See MoreSliding Patio Doors all around 3 season room?
Comments (13)You have already acknowledged the issue with sliding doors...that one half (or more) of your room will NOT be open to the air, when the doors are open. How many will you need for your room? My home had a screened porch and previous owners installed sliders all around it. I have three double sliders and one triple slider on my 3 season porch (it is build in the corner of my home so I have two “glass” sides.) I find that I usually only open one of the sliders during the summer because the others are blocked by furniture, etc. i never open the triple slider (one fixed pane and two sliders) as they are behind my couch and difficult to access. Another issue...how do you plan (or do you plan) to heat the space for the bridge seasons of spring and fall? Baseboard heat?...See MoreRelated Professionals
