Paint Home Decorating Design Dilemma

Bright Yellow Paint, beige tile floors and dark cherry cabinets.

We just purchased a vacation villa in FL! (FURNITURE IS NOT STAYING) We'll probably rent it out seasonally (2-3 months) per yr. It's awful looking, and I know I need to have the walls repainted ASAP. I personally dislike the cherry cabinets, but maybe we can make them work? Can cabinets really be painted? The tile floor, also I dislike (it's beige with a touch of gray... For paint, I like gray or greige... thoughts? Help me transform this kitchen and spend my money wisely! Open to replacing floors...

B.M. White Sand on the walls in eggshell and white sand on the woodwork is semi-gloss will upgrade the look of the cabinets, work with the floor and counter tops.

Check out BM Revere Pewter for the walls. It's a greige. BM White Dove would be beautiful on the cabinets. Depending on your colors, check out SW sea salt. It's a very beautiful pale blue that's so calm and relaxing. Perfect Vaca home color!

If you have real Brazilian cherry all through the level and the kitchen floor has maple look Pergo, I'd take out the Pergo. I'd go with a non-wood kitchen floor so that you don't have to worry about matching or clashing species. Paint the island and if you don't like it, you can replace it. The cheaper/simpler option is the one to try first...

Glad you like the suggestion(s). I have a similar color in my livingroom, Behr's War Muffin but it's a stronger gold and I ended up repainting two of our walls cream to help tone it down a bit. Now I love it but when I chose it, I new nothing about painting or color. I think having a more muted tone would have been my preference if I had known then what I do now. Lighting has so much to do with it too, if you paint a sample on your wall, the Oat may not be as muted as it seems on the card. This isn't our room, but it is a good representation of the Warm Muffin color. As for the drapes, I got the 2nd photo off of google images, the first one is from Pottery Barn. I love the idea of a printed drape. If you're leaning in that direction (or even a printed rug) I would first find the drapes or rug you want and then pull your wall color from them. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you end up choosing and how your project looks when it's done!

With the open concept, I don't think it matters that one corner of one room has dark cabinetry. You can have light walls and backsplash. Which floor plan are you doing? I prefer the first tile. It looks like it's got gray and beige, which will be easier to work with than the peachy tones of the travertine. That's kind of a Tuscan tile, which was popular in the 90s and still, unfortunately, is hanging around in tile shops. My goal would be to tone down the reds of the Bordeaux by letting the granite be the warmest element in the room. Ideally you want to go look at slabs and bring a sample of both floor tiles and the cabinet doors. You'd want to pick a slab that has a lot of cream like this one.

okay..so so far I understood to you the granite is a biggest issue then..change for quiter countertop surface you love(but you need to decide whether you're changing color/stain of the cabinets. since they have to correlate, colorwise). different backsplash. quieter surface will give you more freedom with backsplash too. different pulls(unless you like the ones you chose) Learn pros/cons of your preffered countertop material in advance..Quartz is not bulletproof..(as granite isn't too. none of them are-everything will have pros/cons) for example, I love mitered edge more than rounded-but more possibility it might chip. Find as much as you can about every material you're going to install. If you do decide to paint/re-stain (and no, I'm not advocating white, like, at all)-it should be a pro job(unless you're willing to do it yourself..and know how, and will take lots of time) and yes, it'll chip too if say a fork falls or a knife and bangs onto it)) everything might chip-but on stain you'll see it less/will be less bothered in short learn as much as you can about what you'll be working with..and check your own tolerance to imperfections I can't see your kitchen fully..maybe you won't need any seams. if you do though-you'll see it to a degree on quiter light Quartz. not a biggie but first several days one can't keep eyes off that seam)) then one gets used to. backsplash-whatever will be-decide where you finish it(I'd do lower bottom cabinet level) and how. every guy/gal you'll talk to-being it a store or your GC or installer or..-ask questions. Don't presume they know you don't know..some will educate you, some won't. Ask everything..

I think once the walls are painted and furniture is changed you will like it. Live with it for a a bit and then decide if you want to paint cabinets or new flooring.

I love SW Sea Salt especially for a place in Florida. It is a very subtle green/blue.

I also love Crushed Ice. It's a very light grey with hint of blue.

you can get 8.5 x 11 swatches of the paint colors and I highly recommend doing that.

If you’re planning to rent the home out, it does not make much sense to paint the cabinets. They will not be taken care of, banged up and need touch up constantly. Paint is not as sturdy as factory stained or painted cabinets. A new paint color would definitely give the room a new personality. Same thoughts about the floor-stick with something durable. I’ve got that floor in a few bathrooms and would not choose it off the shelf but it is a neutral. A few colorful rugs would detract from the bare floor.

I think people are more drawn to something a little more tropical in a Florida vacation rental...color is a part of that...the floors are “expected” in florida... but greige/ beige walls are so overdone everywhere...depending on where in Florida...beachy colors or old “old victorian conch house “colors make it more of a Fla. vacation experience

If you dont mind painting .the hutch and the dining set would be very “beachy-vacation” if painted in white or pale colors...

Sea Salt would be a fabulous color for a Florida getaway. Where we vacation in Florida, calm colors are definitely the norm over tropical, bright colors. People want to relax on vacation and bright colors don't tend evoke feelings of relaxation ;)

I'd definitely leave the cabinets alone for now. Once the walls are painted a more soothing color, the dark cabinets will provide a nice contrast.
