Basement renovation

Hello! We are renovating our basement this spring. It will primarily be a play room for our 3 young boys. Any tips or things you recommend? “I wish I did this“ or “I am so glad I did this”. it’s only about 450 square feet.. we are planning a large closet for storage and LVT flooring. Any other thoughts?!

Jessica, if you have 3 rowdy boys with a wild imagination paint the foundation walls and concrete floor and leave the ceiling out, add a few ceiling lights with protective grids... It will save you money and they can get lose and have some fun down there :-)

If they more or less like playing video games, etc more on the calm side ask them what they like in their room it's more fun this way.

When I was building my house one was 12 the other one 8, my wife was also going crazy picking blinds, nice paint for the room, etc ( I told her to leave bare sheetrock lol) the minute they moved in, they had pictures and stickers, etc all over the place you couldn't see the paint, the blinds had to be replaced with curtains because they ripped the strings, etc...

The rooms have been redone twice already so don't go crazy.

That is some practical advice! Years ago when we did our basement, my son was a young teen. His request was wired internet for speed playing his games so we bought the supplies and he did the wiring.
My only suggestion is put in more circuits and more receptacles than you expect to need. Also, consider what type of activity will be expected so you can decide where to place the outlets. I like countertop outlets for my sewing, computer and workshop space and used lower outlets elsewhere

You want light to make the space functional for how you plan to use it and to highlight features. We have many cans plus sconces and pendants. Depending on diameter of the cans, aligned and 4-6 feet apart is generally fine. Install dimmers controlling 3 or 4 so you can adjust the intensity and mood. I’ll try and send a pix of ours later.

Cinderblock walls are notorious for leaking. Cheaper to do but need to be sealed FROM OUTSIDE. This should be accompanied by a buried drainage pipe that drains away water collecting at base of wall. That is expensive to do after the fact as would need to excavate to access outside of wall. First, look at drainage outside the house. Make sure downspouts divert water away from the house and ground slops away. If water is getting in, the cheapest reliable solution is a french drain. Essentially create a channel to let the water into a channel in a controlled manner and feed to a pit with a sump pump to get rid of it. Applying a sealant on inside does not hold in the long run as cinderblock is porous and fills with water until it finds a place to leak through or enough pressure builds that it pushes out sealant surface coating on inside.

Hi RL Relocation LLC - I am really bummed I did not post my project prior to installing the ceiling, but it is what it is now. I am actually still considering having recessed lighting put in after the fact - I'm talking to my contractor about it when he comes tomorrow. When I texted him about it he said it wouldn't be easy, but certainly not impossible to install now. However, I'm wondering, barring that option - do you have any other suggestions for lighting? And you're really making me consider carpet - it would definitely make the cozy, comfortable feel I want. I'm a bit concern due to it being in the basement - there's a bit of a humidity issue down there, but not significant and I'm working to mitigate that. That was so cool how you sent a picture of my room with carpet and paint. So you definitely gave me the idea, but I would want it to use warmer colors for a cozier feel. I am curious how the wood lvp would look tho as well - any chance you could throw up a pix of that? We just installed LVP in basement (we are in the Midwest so not in hurricane territory) with a cork backing and I am surprised how “warm” the floor feels. The air temps are in the teens here and the floor is not cold at all. We did use cellulose to insulate walls and ceiling so it is warmer than before but so far very happy with the warmth factor.
