K & P living

I lived most of my life in the city, so most of the basements are small and with out the natural light. Now, I'm in the mountains and almost all of the homes have their basements as living spaces, maybe that's why, I'm so happy to have windows and doors to the outside so I can enjoy this beautiful nature around me.

These ideas are beautiful for those fortunate enough to have walk-out areas, large above-grade windows, or have the money to actually "dig down" the basement or raise up the house to gain ceiling height. My house in north-central MN was built in the 40's with a cement block foundation, low ceilings, and only enough room above grade for short awning windows. When we decided to take over the main floor living room with a new kitchen, we first remodeled the basement into a playroom and living room. The plan sounded good in theory, but even with fresh decor, heated floors (we used electric heat mats that have proven to be inefficient energy hogs) and lots of recessed lighting, we rarely use the space because no one likes to be down there. It is cold and clammy in the summer, even with a dehumidifier running constantly, and even colder in the winter, unless you happen to be sitting on the floor, and then your butt gets overheated while the upper half of you shivers. We have an ugly cement block fireplace that needs a makeover, but we haven't had that in the budget yet. I've been hesitant to spend the money on a fireplace refresh, because I'm not sure that alone will improve the aesthetics enough for me to want to spend time down there with the spiders.

On the flip side, we have a second home that we purchased at auction and had moved onto our lot, requiring a new basement. My husband and his father built the basement out of ground-contact-certified treated wood. The house, built in 1905, had 9' ceilings in most rooms, and I wanted that same feel in the basement so I specified 10' joists; my FIL thought I was crazy and did a fair amount of grumbling about it. However, even he will now admit that the extra ceiling height is fabulous! We have a couple of egress windows for natural light, but even without those, I don't think I would mind being down there. It is the warmest part of the house in the winter, and nice and cool in the summer. Since we wanted to re-purpose the original, main floor kitchen into a laundry / sewing room, we put a small but fully functional kitchen in the basement until we have time and funds to build an addition for a new kitchen on the main floor. It has worked out wonderfully!
