Basement renovation - family room (paint and floor)

In the middle of "finishing" my basement - adding drywall ceiling and flooring. Had thought to leave paneling and simply add luxury vinyl (wood like) plank flooring - no big deal. But then someone said - oh, too much wood - wood flooring, wood panel walls - maybe do stone lookalike LVP? And I tend to agree – I’m not in a cabin. So now everything is up in the air.

So now I am thinking of painting the walls. They're not in great shape anyway, a couple are already painted, gives me more options for flooring (and walls).

I need to decide on paint on flooring. I'm looking at (3) LVP - wood lookalikes - leaning towards NuCore, Coffee Oak Rigid LVP from floor and décor. Or maybe DuraLux Performance Auburn Acacia Rigid LVP or NuCore Gunstock Rigid (love the gunstock color, but it’s awfully red – looks like the paneling). Thoughts on any of those?

What about paint colors? I want a cozy, comfortable room. This room is where family/kids would hang out over the holidays or if I had a group of friends over to watch a movie – that kind of thing. It likely won’t be used that much other than that. It’s just me in the house most of the time.

Do I go with a nice neutral, e.g., agreeable gray, accessible beige, repose gray (I like green undertones)? Or do I go bold with some darker color? What about an accent wall?

And just to say, I’ll be dealing with the stone fireplace at some point. I can’t stand that stone façade. I think it’s just covering the brick – which is what I’d like more than that façade – but little scared to just pop it off the wall.

Any thoughts are highly appreciated.

being of a lighting mind, I am wondering why you didnt add some recessed lighting here?

As to the paneling, I can see leaving it and just painting it a shade of white, to brighten up the space, plus the wood look is in now. for the flooring in a basement, I would consider carpet.

but for the record painted wood paneling, and wood like laminate floor, is not wood overkill, its done all the time. Or you could just paint and seal the floor and use an area rug or too.

The brick is pretty you could paint the wood 00 off white on Match some color of it to the brick then paint the rest of the room an off-white

rose, yes, the chairs from Target are great. DH had to get involved in the assembly because I had a hard time getting the screws tight enough, but the slipcovers went on easily and the chairs are comfortable. I'll take another pic when my new table arrives, which should be any day now! Side note about the chairs. I had ordered 2 ottomans (you can see part of one behind the sofa in photo #4) from O-stock before I ordered the chairs, and the ottomans match the chairs almost perfectly (which wasn't necessarily my intention). The chairs are darker IRL than they look in the pic. The fabric is woven orange/brown -- more brown than orange.

Wonderful ideas - thank you! Love the Man Shed... maybe I can move James and his tv out to a Man Treehouse or a Man Shed? lol. Once he took his coke and pretzels and went and sat in his car when I had the girls over. No one knew where he went. He's a good boy :) It was terribly pathetic to see him sitting there all alone, but very loving :) He's not a sports fan, thankfully and there is already a fridge down there - we're more than halfway there :) I agree about lamps and fuzzy rugs. The fabric is a great idea - I wonder if I can drape it at the ceiling to create a softer ceiling than just floor joists and tons of pipes, wires, ducts etc. Luckily all the walls are either drywalled (not well, but it's something) or concrete bricks. you guys are the best - thanks for all your help!

I have it in my craft room, and I really like it for the reasons you mentioned. Many moons ago I had a kitchen apt with cork -- from the '20s. I was so impressed with how it held up and the patina it developed, it always stuck in my mind to use it again. thumbs up

Paint color for walkout basement family room? (pic)

Hi, northcarolina. Right, the paint looks fine in some lights and on some walls. I do have a carpet scrap; didn't think of taking that to the paint store, but I will on my next trip.. We have 32 sample cans of paint in our basement, we still don't have the downstairs painted, and some of the rooms upstairs after we finished still don't look quite right to me. (I also am not known for my design sense.) I haven't tried a gray yet, although I put a dot of the Kilim Beige in our MB on top of this Cochise we're trying out in the basement, and it looks very gray in comparison. But it ended up looking "dead" upstairs (next to the purple wall in our MB), and I already wish I could change it in the MB. I probably will, although DH thinks I don't paint carefully enough and gets in a twist every time I say I'm going to redo a room. Can't really blame him, we're in this house 3 1/2 years and the paint saga is still going on! I did ask SW to give me 50% of the Cochise, and we're going to try that next, although a one-foot sample on the wall is a pretty uninteresting color. The Sagey looks great with the carpet upstairs, and on the one wall that extends to our basement, but if we use that it would mean green in the LR, DR area, and down here. With the green granite in the kitchen, I think it's just too much green for me, although now I'm thinking maybe we should do that in the family room in the basement and do the basement office and guest room, which have more light, in different colors. So much for "unifying" the look down here. I'd really like to know how your color adventure turns out. I hope you'll post pix,maybe in this thread? Thanks for your help, and good luck! I should have clarified when my friend said "too much wood" she meant, too much wood if I did not paint the paneling (leaving just a wood finish). Painting the paneling with wood-ish flooring is fine. I wish I had thought of recessed lights! You're talking about can lights in the ceiling right?

Hi RL Relocation LLC - I am really bummed I did not post my project prior to installing the ceiling, but it is what it is now. I am actually still considering having recessed lighting put in after the fact - I'm talking to my contractor about it when he comes tomorrow. When I texted him about it he said it wouldn't be easy, but certainly not impossible to install now.

However, I'm wondering, barring that option - do you have any other suggestions for lighting?

And you're really making me consider carpet - it would definitely make the cozy, comfortable feel I want. I'm a bit concern due to it being in the basement - there's a bit of a humidity issue down there, but not significant and I'm working to mitigate that.

That was so cool how you sent a picture of my room with carpet and paint. So you definitely gave me the idea, but I would want it to use warmer colors for a cozier feel.

I am curious how the wood lvp would look tho as well - any chance you could throw up a pix of that?
