The photo is bad. Show pictures of the range area in context of the entire kitchen. What's on the other side of the range? Take a photo. What are the dimensions of the range and the cabinet?

That is what was called a drop-in range It's the same thing as a slide-in range except the bottom of the range sits on part of the cabinet that's the wooden part under that range. Current versions are not very common. What is the width of the range as well as the depth. I had a former boss who had to replace hers and she simpy had the wooden part below the range removed and she replaced it with a slide-in range.

GE still makes drop in stoves, a 27 inch coil top and a 30 inch smooth top. Check Home Depot for more info & pricing.

Hi awm03 - Yep I saw that at Home Depot. Price is kinda high (or I should say more than I wanted to spend) but I suppose I have to expect that for a not too common (today) home appliance where probably only a few are sold each month. I am hearing that some people re modifying (Ie. cutting) their cabinetry to accommodate a slide-in or freestanding but I will need to see if that would be within my ability. Probably be better to just pay the extra cost and be done with it.

Thanks for all of your helpful comments. Here is some additional information as requested by you ... 23.25" deep (not including handle), 31.25" wide (Includes lip that overhangs countertop on both sides), and 25" high. More and larger photos are below ..

From our depth measurement, it appears that all of the GE drop-in ranges would be just a little too deep and would prevent the cabinets on the right side to open.

Am wondering what you all think about modifying the cabinetry to accommodate a 30" freestanding stove? Is this something the homeowner could do (neatly)? Does the only work involve cutting out the bottom piece with a jigsaw and then sanding or is it much more complicated than that ? Has anyone done this who can give me their thoughts? I would actually prefer to put a freestanding stove there. There is actually a youtube video which shows how someone with a drop-in stove modified their cabinet to accommodate a freestanding stove.

We are someday thinking about the possibility of selling this house - would the presence of a drop-in stove turn people off, or would a DIY cabinet modification make things look worse ? We of course want to get a new stove but of course would like to avoid as much extra cost as possible.

If additional photos would be helpful, let me know.

What is the distance between the front of the box that contains the range and the rear wall? Is that carpet on the floor?

From the rear wall to the front edge of the countertop is 24.75". I believe this is the measurement you're asking for. I could go an inch to inch and a half beyond that and still clear the cabinet door on the right, Yes it's carpet on the floor - It's my brother's house and I can't imagine the thought process of the previous owner who decided to carpet the kitchen. It wouldn't be my choice for sure. Tim

Are you considering switching out the range because it's broken or because it doesn't function satisfactorily or because you think it will increase the value of the house for future resale?

The range does function but it's old and outdated so we're looking to replace it to get something newer and more modern. We also may sell this house one day and know purchasing a range will be required but perhaps JuneKnow is right and a complete remodel is the only solution. Only problem is my brother can't afford that. So we're looking for an alternative.

A new stainless stove with a matching hood is the shortest way to re-do this problem..do some serious searching for the most basic economical model ...stay open to drop or slide-in ...which ever is the best price...and fits....a more modern countertop would be the next step to upgrade it completely...

If I may, without offense meant, (I have a less than perfect designed kitchen too) say that when you get a new stove in here, the rest of the kitchen will look worse. :( The stove and kitchen ground each other. Having a new appliance will show off how the rest of the kitchen is over due for an upgrade. Again, no offense intended. If I was in this situation, I would figure out a way to get a new stove in that space and it may involve cutting off and closing off the cabinet at that corner there. If you don't have to accommodate that L shaped corner with the cabinets, it might make it easier to get something in there. Your brother doesn't have much counter space to the left of the stove anyways. A freestanding range can be a replacement if you don't have to make allowances for the L shape in the counter. You also are now freed up to buy a more standard size range instead of trying to get an odd size range in the space. I have a freestanding range in my oddball kitchen. I have nothing to the left of the range and I have a portable cabinet to the right of it. Best I can do in the space. Take the counter out and replace with something appropriate for the space (it's small, probably wouldn't cost too much), have the cabinets painted or sanded and re-stained and replace all the hardware with something pretty. The cabinets themselves look like there are in ok condition from the photo. New sink too. An undercounter sink for the new counter. If one is handy, some of this work can be DIY to save costs. I hope I didn't offend. It has potential to do better.

PS if your brother can change the cabinet swing on the lower door by the stove from left open to right open, the door can still open, but not 100% perhaps if the new stove is deeper than the current one. But then a slightly larger in depth stove can fit in the space. Standard size seems to have grown over the years. I have drawers that could only open when the dishwasher door was open until I got a Bosch which clearly is shorter in depth than the three other dishwashers I have had here. Oddball kitchens. You make due with what you have to work with.
