Sounds like a fireplace re-do might be a longer-term fix. In the meantime, I'd paint the mantle a dark brown, a similar colour to your end tables. It's not trim and shouldn't be white. It pops out too much in the white colour. Another idea that doesn't involve any ripping-out is to go right over the existing mantle using a mantle slipcover in wood. Thank you Jinx and Yayagal!!! The home was my grandmother's home that we renovated. It is a small house. We have opened up the dining room and living room, but the rooms are still small. In the dining room portion of this room, I have my grandmother's round oak table and an armoire. I like pieces that have been acquired over time. The cabinetry in the kitchen is visible from this room and is oak. I love the suggestions. I love the color in both pictures. I'm a little worried about the print of the second rug. My question is this: The colors are perfect, but does a busy rug make a small room appear smaller? Thank you both for helping! I really don't know what I'm doing.

Thanks Beverly. My calculus teacher used to say that "you can't tell the riders from the horses without pictures" - in this case scaled drawings. I don't have the room layout drawn to scale, so here's a couple of pictures that may help. Looking into room from behind columns. Room is approximately 21' x 17' (window wall to columns) Tape indicates about where a 12 x 15 rug would land - about 2-1/2' from wall Opposite diagonal corner with tape showing where the 12x15 would end up. It's about 28" from column. While this room is slightly larger (and elegant!), and doesn't need the pathway for the Master BR, the relative positions of the furniture is my goal. Note the sofa table and chair behind the sofa, but not on the rug - I would like to have a table and chair and don't care if they're on the rug or not. My preference is to have all the furniture on the rug. Is that enough info to help determine an appropriate size? I can try to draw out a room layout with walls and dimensions, just ran out of day today.
