Hard to say. I am one of those that likes to stick to expiration dates. I might go one day past.

Yeah, I only buy plain yogurt, and it is tart. For some reason I thought Greek would be sweeter/milder.

I'm sure it's okay then. I put some frozen strawberries in it. It sure is thick, which I love.

Not any greek yogurt I have ever had. All plain yogurt to me is tart.

I respect expiration dates for everything but yogurt. Mold or an off taste or off smell are signs to discard.

We love Greek style yogurt, the more tang and sourness, the better. Whole milk type only. There is a medium sized family owned organic producer in our area (Straus) that makes the most heavenly products, that put the much larger brands to shame. No comparison, for those in an area that can get Straus, if you're interested.

I think it's fine. But it can be hard to go back to 'regular' yogurt after enjoying thick creamy delicious Greek yogurt.

Greek yogurt is tart. So it's probably fine.

It is not "expired" as some people may think. Just a pull date, or as you noted, "best by' date. And yes, Greek yogurt is thicker and more tart.

I don't eat much yogurt, and being the frugal, Timothy Tighta%% that I am, I have a hard time forking out $5 for Greek Yogurt on sale. I'll take it when it's free anytime!

Similar to Emer's comment, we also have a local purveyor of Greek yogurt, Ellenos. Their lemon curd, mango and marionberry flavors are to die for!! And I use their plain for various recipes and frequently as a substitute for sour cream. Greek yogurt is always thick and quite tart

Maybe 3 times the price of regular Yoplait or whatever but oh, so worth it!! I could never go back to 'ordinary' yogurt after that :-)

I also pay very little attention to sell by dates. They are not expiration dates and often have little to no relationship with the quality of the product so labeled.

"Best by" dates are NOT expiration dates. The product may go bad before the best by date or be perfectly fine for many days after. Trust your eyes and nose.

As others have stated Greek yogurt is tart and tangy. The only way I would be concerned is if it has other things added to it. Some of the types that are labeled as low fat have additives which might cause problems.

Straus comes in 32 oz containers only, plain but for one flavored one - vanilla - that doesn't interest us.

Best Before dates are how it's labelled in Canada. It's not a Sell By date as yours is in the States.

Even in Canada, the "best before" date is the guarantee date. If you buy it after that date, there's no guarantee that it'll be good, and you're unlikely to get a refund if it's less than satisfactory (though on that particular, I'm less well informed about Canadian practices). By "good", we're not necessarily talking about just not spoiled. "Best" means that it shouldn't have separated unduly (a little water or whey that can be stirred in or poured off is normal, but not if the yoghurt has broken into little clumps or is solids floating in wet). It means there shouldn't be little hard bits on the surface. And it means there shouldn't be bad (sick making) bacteria growth, mold or rot. But that doesn't mean any of that stuff is going to happen within days of the date. They give themselves plenty of cushion between when they guarantee it, and when it's actually likely to degrade in quality. Think of it as a grace period. :)

Yoghurt keeps exceptionally well in a cold fridge, especially if it hasn't been opened and had random environmental bacteria and mold admitted. Unopened yoghurt should be good for weeks past the date.

Many people use "Greek" yoghurt as a substitute for sour cream, especially as a condiment, like as a topping on Mexican food. It's also great in smoothies--the extra sour/tanginess combats the sweetness of fruit. I'm assuming you have unflavored/unsweetened. If you do want to sweeten it, it pairs well with a drizzle of honey.

Plllog none of the stuff you mentioned has been on my yogurt. It's very thick, solid and creamy.

I've got to make something so I can use it as a sour-cream like topping. I do use regular yogurt, but it's not the same as sour cream. This would be heaven.

Yes, honey is a good sweetener, same as I do with regular plain yogurt.

Greek yogurt costs more because you get more solids. The whey has been removed and that is why it is so solid. I use one that has a small amount of added honey and eat it for breakfast six days a week with a couple of tablespoons of pureed strawberries.

To go with patriciae's statement while there is a difference in the cultures, what makes it go from milk to yogurt, many different spellings, it is primarily strained to remove more of the whey rather than any real difference. It is the culture that is added that makes the difference between say Greek vs Bulgarian. Person preference the Bulgarian if you can find it is better added to cooked items where the Greek is better for non cooked as a personal choice.

My spouse prefers the milder, less tangy whole milk brands. Recently we discovered the Zoi brand from Auburn Dairy in Washington state. Its Greek yogurt with honey is excellent, so far the best one we've tried.

I was greatly happy. Not too tart. Not too sweet. I do like Greek style, but need a but of milk to smooth it out.

I've been buying the Zoi brand for years - I first bought it because it was less expensive than the other brands. I buy the plain whole milk variety, and we sweeten it as needed with a little maple syrup.

A long ago time my doctor told me that in order for my body to utilize both vitamin D and Calcium there had to be a certain fat ratio. Ever since then I have been using the higher fat percentage, 4 %, in my yogurt. Different brands are found in different areas of the country but currently I am using the Icelandic 4% type to help the absorption. Some brands I find too sharp. Other brands are like tasting nothing. It will depend on how I am eating it as to which type/brand I purchase. Mixed with cereal for breakfast I prefer less sharp. On a baked potato sharper with more flavor. Too many lesser fat brands use thickener in them which I try to avoid.

Because of the high acid content in yoghurt, it's very VERY unlikely to grow bad bacteria that will make you sick. It will, however, mold. To combat this I store it upside down in the refrig.
It'll be fine to eat for a few more weeks.

I hardly bother with sell by dates. If it still tastes good then it's fine to eat. I'm sure that if it went bad it would have a nasty bitter taste. I've had milk last weeks past the date and still tasted like milk.

Mine always lasts well past the date. During 2020+ I've been buying cases of the 6 oz. ...If we don't go through it fast enough I freeze them. Nice to have on hand since I use in cooking, breakfasts, smoothies....

We get through a lot of Greek yoghurt. It isn’t meant to be sweet. We use it with stewed fruit for breakfast but also in many savoury dishes. I cut mayonnaise with it to reduce the fat for a kind of tartare sauce to go with oily fish. Also when making potato salad. Or mix it with mint, cilantro, cucumber etc to make raita style accompaniments for curries or kebabs. Or make the classic Greek yoghurt and honey, although it’s never as good as the yoghurt in Greece. Unopened it keeps at least two weeks past the best before date ime.

I like to make a savory dip with greek yogurt, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, pinch of cayenne, paprika all to taste for dipping pita chips or potato chips

Yes, Zoi is the brand we like to buy. There are others when we cant get it but it is a good well made product. I like the one with a little honey for breakfast but the plain for other things. I eat about four oz a day with fruit.

If I used greek yogurt, I would have to keep it a secret from my husband and just pretend that it has sour cream in it...HA! He will not eat anything with a funny name...UGH! Picky picky! One time he was eating eggplant Parmesan at a buffet at an Italian restaurant and liking it but I made the mistake of telling him it was "EGGPLANT" and he wouldn't touch it anymore.
