To think, I used to make fun of people who used fake flowers....
Comments (13)If you were to type in artificial flowers in the GJ search bar, you would most likely find several postings where we've all had this same discussion. Personally, for me, I use artificial flowers on my front porch for a variety of reasons...I mix them with the real ones to add more colors since annuals tend to like full sun and my porch is shady. I also use them because my four cats and two very large possums rule my front porch, so the fake ones can take more of a beating than the real ones and because I can move them and bend them at will. They add a pop of color and since I have so many real gardens to tend, it allows me to spend more time there and still make sure my front porch looks inviting. Your porch looks great! And with a new little one to take care of, it's an even better idea. Love your color choices and all of your pots, etc. And....we've all made comments of other people's stuff and later had to eat those words, so don't feel too bad about that! Great job and very creative too!...See MoreI think I finally found white granite!
Comments (32)Yay! A lot of Bay Area people here. Firsthouse, I saw your slab at DaVinci. Just beautiful! I, too, have been to so many slab places in the Bay Area (same ones as you, I'm sure, plus all the San Leandro places) and was very frustrated that I couldn't find anything. Your advice was very good... "keep looking! Don't give up and ask if there is new stuff coming in, even at slabyards you have already visited." And I would add...if they have new stuff coming in, ask if there's a wait list. I found what I wanted (at DaVinci, actually), but all the slabs were sold and the next shipment was in a month. I was on my way to IRG (Brisbane) last week to buy my 2nd choice granite (very distant 2nd choice) and I got a call from a slab place (All Natural Stone) in San Jose that said they had a new shipment in and I was off the wait list for my 1st choice (Typhoon Bordeaux). They put my name on 2 slabs. Immediate U turn on 101 to go see it! I NEVER thought the wait list thing would work out. What a relief (demo's in a couple of weeks)! So congratulations, firsthouse mp, and hang in there everyone else! Your countertop is out there! Julie (Woodside, CA)...See MoreSo I think I accidentally found "my slab" today!
Comments (13)When we go back we will take the good camera, hopefully it can capture more of the colors than the iPad. With the light hitting the stone it really did a number on the colors captured. You can see some of the browns in the top picture from their website if you look near the white spots. Some of the medium grey is that mossy sage green color. I know the granite guy had said a natural cherry or just about any brown would look lovely (I had already told him we aren't doing painted cabs). I admit I wasn't prepared for finding a stone, I may well have just been carried away and not noticed enough detail in the coloring. It really was spectacular in person! I am very much looking forward to taking some doors back up there, hopefully next week. I appreciate the feedback, I will go with an open mind. I didn't have much of a color scheme in mind, other than I wanted medium to dark cabinets. DH wanted dark floors, dark cabinets, dark granite. I was not a fan of the really dark granites he wanted, but this one is dark enough for him, not predominately brown (he does not like brown), and I really love all the colors. So we will work backwards from there!...See MoreI think I've found my next project...
Comments (10)Yes, I figured it out. When you lay the strip on the square, put the top just like she did, at 2 inches from the top corner, but at the bottom, instead of lining it up right at the lower corner, come up about a quarter of an inch as it crosses the edge above the corner. (This kind of stuff is so hard to explain in words, I need to start making my own videos! LOL!) This makes the end pointed and also gives enough room for seam allowance for sewing on the adjacent blocks. I'm changing the pattern a little (as usual) and I made a block the size that she made for the middle but I'm making half-size blocks to go around it. Sort of a medallion quilt. So I had to figure out how wide to cut the strips and also had to change the measurement of where to put the strips across the square. It took me so long to figure this out, I'm so engineering-challenged....See Morekathyg_in_mi
