Green lawn/buff lawn--design challenge
Comments (10)Frankie: I know what you mean. When I started researching "winter interest" it seems like there is information devoted toward colder climates where snow cover is common and warmer climates where there are a lot of plants that will stay green and even flower during winter. Here is the middle ground, perennials die back and lawns go dormant but we do not have the snow cover to hide it and we cannot keep our gardens going year round. What I have started to do is to wait for some dry days after we have gotten a few good freezes (usually late December) and get out and tidy up my beds and apply mulch. I like the shredded leaf mulch I can get free from the county (Fairfax). It is a good time of year to edge beds (if I can get motivated and have enough daylight hours). I have found that this makes the beds (even if they are void of plants) more of a highlight. A bed that is full of perennials, shrubs and evergreens during the summer can look decent with the bare shrubs and splashes of color from the evergreens during the winter. - Brent...See MoreDesign questions about lawn cleanup tool

Comments (14)morspheuspa & ronalawn82, thanks for your follow-ups! I appreciate both of your posts! I just finished up my RU'ing this AM. My backyard has a fence on the back-side, so that was not a problem. One side, I used cardboard and of course I know my neighbors well and communicated with them. They said "no problem, we're not picky" and were nice. The other side has a large elite home with a backyard that is awful (their backyard is next to my yard). I just sprayed carefully inside my "border string" there, since their yard is crud I'm not worried. I could even seed for them! It's supposed to rain in 2 hours. The RU bottle says "rain proof" in 5 minutes, so I hope that it will still take care of my grass and weeds!...See MoreSquirrels (Regarding Lawn)
Comments (2)In some states transporting squirrels is illegal, so I would check with that before you keep it up. I knew an old guy who used to trap them, paint their tails red as a warning and then let them go. If he caught any with a red tail, he would make a big fuss and talk about how he was going to shoot them, but I think normally just drove and released them. He still had tons of squirrels. I had cats digging in beds when I lived in the city and got some "sonic blasters" that made a high pitched noise when they detected motion making the area unpleasant enough that the cats decided to find somewhere else to do their business. I think it is marketed for squirrels also, but it was marketed as being inaudible for humans and I did not find that to be the case, so YMMV. I wonder if anyone has ever tried broadcasting cayenne or something to make digging in the lawn unpleasant......See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
