Green lawn/buff lawn--design challenge

I live in an area of Bermuda grass lawns. The yards are green half the year, and buff half the year.

Although it may not seem like anything more complicated than "designing for winter interest", I'm struck by what a strong element the dormant lawn becomes in the landscape, and how different an element that is compared to the green lawn. There is a definite different seasonal influence regarding the amount of lawn, its shape, its relation to other plantings, and what paint or brick colors look good (in all seasons), edging and hardscape, etc.

It really makes one think of the idea of designing with black and white photos. The dormant lawn can be analogous to snow-coverered lawn (minus snow on the shrubs and other plants).

There are many shrub/plant colors which look especially good with green lawn, or are "forgiven" amongst the green lawn, but not with buff lawn, and vice versa.

I will still aim most of my planning around my favorite warmer months, but still, it makes one think.
