My grandmother always said no house was complete without antlers, so she gave me these. No idea where to put them -- too kitsch -- but then I said they always remind me of a hat rack, so why not in the foyer?

The walking sticks -- palička -- were over the mantel in the old house, one of the handles is carved with the family name.

The bench too was from the old house. A small perch for donning shoes.

These wildlife plates on my living room wall belonged to the most inspiring person I have ever known. Me and my family happened to move in next door to him in 1965. We became best friends. Leroy, then about age 35 had been a bed fast invalid since early childhood due to the same genetic inherited disease that I was much later diagnosed with. After he passed at age 45 his caretaker gave the plates to me saying that Leroy meant for me to have them when he bought them. We shared a deep love of all things in nature. Someday I will have to tell you all about this very special man.

My grandfather was a taylor who immigrated from Canada to NH where he established his business, American Dye House. This is a plate my aunt gave me from his business that was used to print ads of various sizes. My hubby had it pressed and framed for me when I retired a year ago.

Two items from my in-laws. My FIL specifically wanted me to have the carved chickadee; we shared a deep love of nature. My DH chose the owl print from about a half dozen prints by this same artist.

Inherited from my father in law. The painter was a family friend.

This was given to my great grandfather; it had something to do with horse racing, as he was a trainer. It dates from late 1880's. My cousin was happy to give it to me because she found it hideous. It made me nervous to fly back to CA carrying it.

This antique fan with carved ivory from my MIL.

Mine are the only things my mom had from her father, who passed away in 1921 when she was 11. They are watch fobs and she treasured them. She lived with me the last two years of her life and when she passed, I had the fobs and a picture of my grandfather and grandmother (neither of whom I ever met), framed. He has one of the fobs hanging from his pocket. I gave this to my oldest brother when he was 75. He had the only boy that carries our name and I thought he might passed it down to one of them. He was so touched. He only had it about 7 or 8 months before he passed away from cancer. My sister-in-law has passed the piece to his son, who has two sons of his own.

murraysmom, those are so special and especially all framed together. Very touching how you passed it to your brother and that his son has it now.

After my mother in law died, I found these in a dresser drawer in her house and was thrilled to have them. I had them framed and they hang in my living room. They must have taken her hours to make.

I've posted this photo before but we have very few inherited pieces in our family. However I do have and treasure all the quilts from my Nana. She lived in a rural area of New Mexico and was always tatting or crocheting or quilting. Most of her quilts were made from old dresses, tablecloths or flour sacks and were used daily. This is the only one I have where she was able to use new fabric.

My mother gave this pitcher to me. It had belonged to her mother. She doesn’t know how her mother came to own it since they were very poor and she had very few nice things, almost none. It’s a Victoria majolica Leaping Fish pitcher, circa 1870. I loved looking at it when I was a kid and am glad to own it now.

Looks so realistic. You can almost see it swimming off the vase.
