Lightning...first off, an east window is fine for both of these hoyas. Your problem is allowing them to get too dry. Both of these hoyas must remain moist. As G.G. pointed out, H. multiflora (H. javanica) prefers high humidity, but this can be compensated for by keeping the soil moist. There are many factors involved in the frequency of watering..the size of the pot...the smaller the pot, the more frequently you need to water the plant. Also, keep in mind the temperature, humidity and the amount of light the plants are subject to. H. multiflora is an easy hoya to grow...simply keep the soil moist, not wet. H. blashernaezii is a more difficult hoya to deal with...my experience is that it is "fussy" until it's well established..once established, it's an easy hoya. Do not, under any circumstance, allow either of these hoyas to dry out...it will result in yellow leaves. The difference you describe between the yellow leaves of multiflora and blashernaezii is due to the succulency of these hoyas..multiflora is much less succulent, and the yellow leaves will fall off quite quickly...blashernaezii is much more succulent, and the yellow leaves will hang on for weeks. Be sure that your soil mixture is "fast draining", keep the plants moist, not wet. I find that I need to water H. multiflora thoroughly once a week....blashernaezii requires thorough watering twice each week...the difference may be attributed to pot size and the fact that blashernaezii is closer to the ceiling, i.e., warmer temperature. Accustom yourself to test for soil dryness by sticking your finger into the soil..if it's dry, water thorougly..if moist, wait a day or two and re-test. And, as Jacob indicated, check for pests..the most prevalent one being mealybugs..but, these are easy to detect and remedy. Wishing you much success. Fondly, Patick

Kim, Yes, that's actually Dischidia ruscifolia. It's definitely worth growing, and since Hoyas & Dischidias take the same care, why not? They call it "Million Hearts Dischidia", BTW... If you root in perlite, it does produce some awesome roots. And it's better than straight water because the roots that develop in water are different than the ones they need in soil, so it has an adjustment period when you go from water to soil. When I root in perlite, I keep the pot in a deep tray with some water in the bottom all the time so the perlite never completely dries. When the water starts to get low, I water from the top. But this time of year, they root fast right in soil, so there's really no need for a two-step process... I usually remove yellow or damaged leaves just because I figure the plant/cutting doesn't need to put any energy into a leaf that's a goner. If there's any signs of dehydration, I put the cutting, pot and all, into a rooting dome or gallon-size baggy to maximize humidity. Denise in Omaha

Thanks for your reply. I've even clipped the vines into an upwards position onto the hanging tripod stems and they still yellow and die back. When the vines get too long and unmanagable, I wrap the vines around the outside of the plant and secure them with plastic hair claw pinchers (the Dollar Store) that are loose and not tight in an untaught upward position. I've tried increasing misting, decreasing misting, changed to dif types of foliar feeding including fish emulsion. At this point I'm just not going to dwell on it and accept it as a quirk of the indiv plant. Otherwise, I'll make myself crazier. Thanks again for your reply. Krisi

Over watered? It looks underwatered, to me. Being in that clay pot with that dry mix, my best guess is that it dries out way too fast and doesn't hold on to too much moisture whenever you do water it. I have mine growing outside, hanging from my roof, where it gets plenty of bright indirect sunlight all day long, and I spray it down every evening when the sun sets. Not only is it growing like a weed, but it's currently blooming, too.
