Advice on painting fireplace tile

Eliz

We have a large fireplace with mosaic tiled surround as a major focal point in our living room. While it was professionally done, it is simply not to our taste. In fact, as we are now spending so much time at home, we’ve come to really hate it. So, we’d like a change.

A few questions:

  1. Any advice on prepping the surface before we paint? Any advice on a specific primer for this application would be appreciated! We are hoping not to sand, but wondering whether that’s a huge mistake?

  2. Thoughts on color? The walls are a warm white. Wondering whether we would want to match the wood trim in the room (more of a pure white), go for something just off-white, or something more dramatic (a terra cotta color? Grey?)

  3. Is this just a terrible, terrible idea? We realize it will look unusual because you’ll still see the shapes of the circles and lines everywhere, but we really dislike it as-is and ultimately have larger renovation plans, so figure we can always re-tile at a later time if we want to (not feasible anytime in the next year)... we’re hoping this will make the fireplace fade into the background a bit more in the meantime rather than dominate the visual space so much.

Thanks for your opinions!
