I need advice about painting my brick fireplace

I am painting the brick fireplace in my new condo. Following the advice of the people at the paint store, as well as some online resources, I started with a coat of latex Kilz. The brick is very rough and it is surrounded by large areas of grout. I was prepared for it to be a slow moving project, but my dilemma is tha the brick is pitted with holes ranging from pinhole size to holes that are about 1/8 inch. Getting the Kilz into these holes, especially the pin-sized ones, is nearly impossible.

Is my only solution to use very small brushes and exhaust what remains of my sanity trying to fill them? I plan to do the final coat with a good quality, semi-gloss latex paint.

Has anyone done this before?

Any advice would be appreciated!
