I would look for more of a beige/taupe tile with more warmth, similar to your current floor color. It will be less of a contrast against your hardwoods, and also coordinate better with your paint color.

Beige looked very pink in our lighting. My husband also hates beige. I’m not 100% on paint color at all.

Dark charcoal looks good with a more orange color. So would navy or a dark blue like Montauk Baltic Storm, but those would clash with your kitchen.

Have you considered stripping and restaining the floors?

It looks like vinyl sheet flooring. I'd be tempted to go dark if restaining is not an option but you see everything with dark floors and in a kitchen, that would be very messy.

IMO the kitchen is being designed with no thought to the rest of the house. I do not think those tiles work with the wood , I think they work well with the kitchen but what is the rest of the house decor? I would just do the same wood floor now through the kitchen to keep it simple

We can not restain the hardwood. It is in literally every other room in the house except one bathroom. Even in the downstairs bath (I know). The woods we have are 100 year old refurbished and the previous owner did not have any more.

I Kindof feel like the kitchen doesn’t go either but we are hoping to design the rest of the house after doing the kitchen to have more he feel of the kitchen in other rooms and Less of a traditional feel the hardwood floors give.

Current kitchen floor is sheet linoleum and cracking. We have to replace.

I don’t want to go much darker because 4 kids and 3 dogs 😀

and honestly budget is very limited.

I don't hate that tile with the hardwood and the tile is lovey on its own, if a bit dark for a kitchen.

One combination I adore with honey hardwood is with grayish greens and grayish green-blues (see link below for some ideas) so you could try a slightly greener gray for the paint color. (Cue folks who think green has no place in a kitchen).

Rich blue or green floor tiles might be a LOT with the black countertop, but can really sing with warm wood tones.

For a lighter gray tile floor option, there's a tile at Home Depot which I think is just such an absolute steal--search "Nova Falls Gray." Could absolutely go with anything.

And as another poster mentioned, hardwood flooring is SUPER cheap right now and a wood floor would look lovely with the colors you've already chosen.

Personally, I think the room-to-room relationship is not the most important. You only really think about it when you're in one room, looking into another room, and actively evaluating your own adherence to design principles, which is not most of the time you spend in the home.

Your hardwood floors are gorgeous! I would never change a 100 y/o hardwood floor that’s in good condition. I also like the gray tile, especially if your kitchen is closed off from the rest of the house (not open concept). The gray is a pretty neutral color and it looks like there is a step down separation between rooms. Hope you post pics when your renovation is complete!

And have you looked at the higher end vinyl floor tile products? You could find one that looks like medium grey/charcoal slate. I think it could go directly over your vinyl if your subfloor is in good shape. Have you had your local flooring contractors out to look yet?

My advice with dogs and kids and floors is to avoid a solid matte looking floor with no visual variation to it. The subtle stone like variations in a slate look will be a life saver as you see every speck and wet paw print on a SOLID floor. The solid grey floor you have selected will be a nightmare to keep looking clean.

We did look at luxury lvp as the tile guy actually recommended it lol. But I just couldn’t find one I loved. My husband actually wanted to do brick but it’s just such a large room (400 sq fy) I feel like it would be too much pattern.

the floors I have now are a nightmare to clean so I’m used to daily vacuum and mop. It’s actually the kids chores.

Brick is also waaayyyy out of our budget. We have about 3k to do this with.

If you don't want beige, look for a slate look porcelain tile, or a deeper tan/brown colored tile with some variation that would work with your wood, like this example. Or consider a patterned vinyl with warm tones.

Popping back in to say that I also love your hardwood. It's a gorgeous honey colour on my screen. I also like the current vinyl you have in the kitchen in terms of harmonizing colours. I replaced vinyl with tile in our kitchen 15 years ago and soon regretted it. Really not a fan of tile in the kitchen. People had warned me back then about how hard it is on joints but I dismissed it. Now, it's my turn to warn others.

Did I miss the suggestion of Marmoleum? I've seen a few lovely kitchens with Marmoleum in this forum. If I understand correctly, it's similar in underfoot comfort to vinyl, but more sustainable than vinyl. I don't know if it's a pricey option though. Might be worth a look?

Thank you! Is that similar to lvp maybe? I’ll take a look! I dont hate the hardwoods and agree my current flooring ”goes” with it. Although it has to be redone it is worn through and ripping. I think the gray tile will have to do. My husband loves it and his patience is growing thin lol.

I love your wood floors! So your husband doesn’t like beige? Does he not like this color floor? As the commenter above mentioned, tile *is* really hard. I miss the days of linoleum. It’s so much more forgiving if you drop something, and easier on your feet. Our newest house has LVP in the kitchen and I’m very excited to get away from tile.

To be clear, I think the grey tile "goes" with your hardwood. My reticence is the same as others have pointed out: a solid mid to dark tone colour shows everything, especially in a kitchen. (That said, what we see on our screen might not match real life colours. :))

No, Marmoleum is not like LVP. It's linoleum, a natural biodegradable material. Here's a link I found. (More affordable than I thought.) Comes in sheet and click tile format so installation shouldn't be complicated?

It’s def a mid tone gray. We do vaccum and mop daily or sometimes 2x a day. I think no matter what we choose it’s going to need daily cleaning.

You have sheet vinyl, not linoleum. Unfortunately, people (including floor stores) use these terms interchangeably but they are NOT the same thing. Vinyl is a petroleum product, linoleum (brand name of Marmoleum) is made of cork, wood flour, and linseed oil. Linoleum was the original sheet flooring until vinyl came onto the scene. Marmoleum is naturally anti-microbial against C-diff and MRSA, it is warm underfoot, softer on your feet and back and easy to care for, lasts for many, many years. I have Marmoleum in my kitchen and I USED to have tile—I will never, ever have tile again. People may suggest cushioned rugs in the kitchen if you have tiled floors, but I don’t need anything extra to clean and the idea of rugs in a kitchen just skeeves me out. Make the choice that’s right for you, but I would investigate Marmoleum. Good luck.

(What a mess taking up the tile will make. :( ) I'd love to see pics of your floor, if you can share, Anna. Btw, we have a cushion rug in front of our sink but it's not a rug, per se. It's some vinyl cushion that's easy to wipe clean. Not fabric.

This is my Marmoleum which we installed ourselves. We had a hard time finding installers in our area—despite some local flooring stores offering it for sale, they really had no experience with installation and we didn't want anyone practicing on our kitchen. These are the tiles, they also offer a click and sheet Marmoleum. We ordered from Green Building Supply.
