Island Downdraft Dilemma
Comments (8)Realistically speaking...IMHO, I think the answer depends on what type of cooking you do, as well as, aesthetically, what look do you like? In my former home, I had a Thermador cooktop and downdraft in an island. I don't think I ran the downdraft more than a few times. I didn't do a lot of frying, greasy, or smokey cooking then. I had a very open floor plan and lots of windows. It just didn't seem to be a problem not running it. In this house, I have a range and hood on a wall. I didn't care for the look of a hood over an island, so I went with a wall placement. Plus, my cooking style has changed as my children have gotten older and I do a lot more high heat, greasy, smokey, etc, type cooking...so I have my blower on all the time. Being a hood, being on a wall, turning it on before I cook, I think it's pretty doggone effective. I think my current cooking habits might not be well-served with a downdraft. I don't know...maybe a good 14" one would really perform good enough. I just don't know from experience. If I knew my cooking habits didn't involve greasy, high heat (like a wok), smokey events...I wouldn't hesitate, in an island situation, to get a downdraft only because that's my personal preference as far as looks are concerned! Oh, and get a remote blower!! I didn't directly answer your question, but I hope I gave you some things to think about! :)...See MoreCan I route a vent hood through a down-draft vent?

Is there crown molding elsewhere in the house?Oh my, have you hit on a sore subject. Crown molding was only included in the formal areas and master bedroom. They also crowned no sloped ceilings. Adding crown to other areas was $250 per "room". $250 now, not so much. 20yrs ago when we're building a house and running out out money, it was. Crowning just that hallway and the adjoining family room cost $500 because it counted as 2 "rooms" even though it was only as much crown as a bedroom; the exterior wall is sloped so the family room is really only 1/2 crowned (one wall not crowned and open on one side). I didn't crown the kitchen because the only wall that would have received crown is that single wall (because again, the outside wall is sloped), and it would have cost me $250. Don't think so. I did the crown in my office myself (come on -- a box) along with the sloped ceilings in the formal living room. If *I* can do it, why in the heck couldn't a carpenter? New cabinets will go up to the ceiling in the kitchen. They put tile crown where I cared in the master bath when it was remodeled. What I should have done was made them crown the hallway to the bedrooms just to punish them. It has so many compound angles it would make any carpenter cry....See Morerange dilemma--induction,hybrid, or downdraft?
Comments (3)I'd rule out the hybrid option, if you can. Induction is far better; you will be annoyed at having two hobs you like and use, and two hobs that are slower and mostly unused. In the years ahead, you'll be happier with induction vs. an electric range option, if you can afford it. Downdraft may be a problem with some slide-in induction ranges, like the E'lux (which pushes the downdraft vent so far to the rear that it may be ineffective). Perhaps GE's induction range is a better option for you; I'm not sure....See MoreDowndraft vent in island or Vent hood in front of window?
Comments (10)I had a gas stovetop with a downdraft on as island, and I thought it was great. My island was large enough to still have a wide area behind the stove for countertop use. I liked that the vent was unnoticeable most of the time with a clear view outdoors. I cooked dinner almost daily, and it worked perfectly fine for the infrequent times I needed the vent. I also had a large window and French doors that were often open nearby. I think a a lot has to do with your particular space, and what types of things you cook. Mine was a downdraft for 4 large burners plus a center griddle....See Moredarbuka
