At this point in construction your best option may be landscaping.

I would leave the walls alone but switch to a glass door and a porch light that hangs low enough to be visible.

If you do want to mess with re-framing walls, don't go wider but either raise the header to make the front door 8 foot or add a transom above, something in stained glass would be pretty (do a shorter light with this).

Draw a 3D model of the house.

Add a beam below the portico roof on all 3 sides.

Possibly lower the portico roof to align with the main roof.

I presume that's just a temporary construction front door? I haven't seen a front door that plain on new construction in ages. A "pretty" front door will make that space look so much better.

Yes. The actual is a beautiful wood door. Thinking adding a sidelight? It’s the height between the door and the top of the portico. It didn’t look that profound in our drawings.

The door area is currently underwhelming for sure. Plus the fact that the door is set back from the front of the house makes it recede and seem even smaller

I have no knowledge of construction, so I’m not sure if it’s too late to add a transom window above the door. Or a sidelight. Or both.

A hefty hanging light will help.

Could you change the door to one with glass? Maybe get a taller front door, it’s probably not more than adding sidelights.

It seems to me that if the portico roof were aligned at the same height as the rest of the roofing, it would look much better.

Unfortunately, maybe not enough time was spent by plan designer to make the eves all consistent?

Bedroom 3 is my office. Very custom built for my family. Bed 2 has such a big closet because it’s my special needs son calm down space.

Can’t do much taller door because will hit front entry light. Thinking of changing front entry light to recessed because then could.

I think that with columns, lighting and a cool front door, this space will work. It looks large enough to hold folks waiting to come inside, protected from the elements, etc.

The key will be finding the right light fixture, I think. And ensuring the columns are beefy enough.

I now understand the present need, but it is something that may impede resale.

I think part of what's making it look odd is that it's so not finished. The skinny pole supports, the underside is still without it's lighting, and the construction door makes it look a bit worse than it is. I think just having the supports gone and the proper columns in place will help a lot with it looking more right.

Mark - I understand. We hopefully will never need to resell or at least not for a long time. I have a husband with cerebral palsy and a son with special needs so this house was a work of love.

As I believe RES said, add a beam to reduce the height of the opening. You really need this anyway.

It will look much better when done. Hard to see now. But I agree with PPF and RES you do need the beam
