What does Bona Mega One look like on unstained white oak

Hi all - I'm building a house with #2 white oak flooring. Has anyone out there ever put 3 coats of Bona Mega One down on unstained white oak? Did it look yellow, amber or overly warm? I am loving the look/tone of the freshly sanded wood. Considered stains but all looked too red and not enough contrast with our island (stained weathered oak). When i put samples of the Bona Mega One on our floor, the color does change a bit even though it is supposed to be clear. I considered Bona Nordic to preserve the freshly sanded white oak look, but I have read it can be tricky to apply and don't want a hazy look. Overall color palate for the home is cool tones (smokey blues, grays, black and white). I certainly don't want to end up with yellow or amber floors. First pictures show some stain examples with a separate swatch of one coat of Bona Mega One. The last pic are some sample boards with 2 coats of Bona Mega One next to the island.

The Mega One is not supposed to amber (over time). When investigating a water based finish, remember they will be almost identical to 'wet wood'. In other words, if you were to wipe down the wood (2ft x 2ft patch) with a damp cloth, you will see 'wet wood'. That's the 'colour' change you are describing. And that's what I'm seeing in the last photo.

Bona Mega ONE

Bona website states:

KEY BENEFITS
• High build characteristics
• Reduced drying time
• Excellent sanding properties
• Non-yellowing

Mega One is considered a 'medium' toughness finish for regular - busy residential situations. The average US household is MUCH tougher on finishes than the Europeans. Three coats would be the right amount for a US house hold. I would expect the Mega One to require a buff and coat just before it reaches 20 years old....which is roughly when you would be looking at a full sand and refinish anyways.

If you want tougher, then work with the Bona Traffic HD. It will get you 20+ years without much effort. If you work with 3 coats of HD you will easily exceed 25-30 years.

Nordicseal will make the floors whiter. You want to use Naturaseal. If, you really want a raw look. Top it off with Bona Naturalle.

These floors look great and I love the herringbone. Well my floors were coming out looking so good and my contractor’s flooring guy used SEMI GLOSS for the finish even though we all told him not to and to use Satin. Everyone I talked to suggested satin. He said he used semi gloss by accident. So far he only did one coat, can he cover with one coat of Satin and the he’ll be ok? I do not want the shiny floor look. My floors are white oak select so I want the floors to shine through not the gloss.

Carly, please provide source for your floors, exactly what I’m looking for. Also thank you for post and thank you too other posters. I had just had floors done by a floor shop, two years of hospice requires me to redo them, seems a layer can be scraped up with a spackle scraper easily and turned dark ( like cherry wood does in sunlight but this was white oak ). So due to budget going to have to give this a go on my own. These posts priceless. After seeing this post and refinishing parents floor, I want your oak in my house … you did fantastic job.

We didn't move in yet so I cannot comment on it 🤷. You might want to do some reading regarding matt finish. Some people complain that is hard to live with finish, because for example foot marks while walking barefoot. I think they are some discussions on houzz regarding that

I've used Naturale twice and neither customer liked it and went to Traffic. With a very low gloss option in Traffic it seems kind of redundant but maybe I'm just not that discerning. I have some on a floor in my showroom and it's held up well but seems to have gotten shinier over time. What color are they doing for stain?

Thank you! That is helpful SJ McCarthy and G & S Floor Service. We have already ordered the Bona Mega One. Will I achieve the more raw look and less "wet wood" look if I layer in one coat of Bona Nordicseal or Bona Naturaseal on the base layer? If so, which one would look best?

Hi! My installer did 2 coats of Nordic Seal today. 1 coat in the morning and 1 coat in the afternoon. They're supposed to start the finish tomorrow morning and it is Bona MEGA clear in 2 coats. Do you think there is any major issue with this?

No issues, it's all Bona finishes. I prefer to see Traffic HD used for better protection.

@G&S Floor Service thanks so much! Do you think it might be worth adding 1 coat of Traffic HD over the Mega Clear? Maybe we can just do it ourselves. Also, quickly took a peek through front door at the floors today and noticed a white spot on floor, does this look like it’s from the Nordic? Or what would it be? Should I tell the flooring guy this needs to be fixed??

Besides the debris, that can be picked off with a razor. I would leave the floor alone and enjoy it. If, you want a coat of Traffic HD over it, pay the contractor to apply it. Avoid attempting to DIY the coat, you will void the one year warranty you have with them. You can DIY in the future.

H! @G & S Floor Service. Your recommendation 6 months ago was to use HD traffic finish on my floors. However, my floor guy did only the 2 coats of MEGA clear and I am starting to see faint scratches (probably from my kids' toys). Would it be OK if now we decide to add the HD traffic over the floors and if so what is the procedure to be followed? Can we just add traffic on top or do we need to prepare the floor in any certain way? Also, if there are a few scratches or cracks can they be fixed at the time of adding HD traffic? Also, there are quite a lot of gaps in the floors (assuming floors have shrunk because of cold winter) will the traffic just drip into the cracks when applied, is that normal? thank you so much in advance for your help.

You would need to do a deep clean and recoat with Traffic HD. You can do one or two coats. Gaps are seasonal, which is normal. The dry season is almost over, depending where you live.
