Found 10 dead bluebirds in box
Comments (9)Just this morning, Feb 27, I decided to clean the blue bird boxes. I was shocked to find 11 dead birds in one of the boxes. Located in east central Mo. we have had some below zero nights but I can't determine how long these birds have dead. They looked really pathetic. I thought that I had been taking really good care of them during the cold weather, putting out lots of mealworms, other food and making sure they had water. I had as many as 15 at the feeder some days even during the cold weather. Now when I go out and whistle for them to come get their mealworms only one shows up. It must have been the whole flock that died in that house, so sad. Harry...See MoreHigh Society confirmed dead; assumed dead First Mate found alive!

Comments (1)Hi Anita- so so sad! I truly hate to hear that news! The males are such beauties! The only thing I can think is pesticides. Maybe the males were hunting in a yard/ area where pesticides had been used & the babies were being fed from that same hunting area? If it didn't look like any foul play took place, that's the only thing I can imagine. Some babies are affected by heat this time of year, but it's usually when they're younger. You know what? There are lots of bluebird experts on bluebirdnutcafe.com. You may want to inquire there to see if anyone else has any ideas. So glad the TRES nest was successful! So very sorry to hear about your bluebirds! Nicole...See MoreDead Bluebird on nest with eggs
Comments (1)Oh- how sad. I think the current female will want to lay her own eggs since it seems the existing eggs are from the female that died (hate that). Assuming the male is/was mating with both. Make absolutely sure the new female is not incubating those eggs. I just left in the previous message ways you can tell f the eggs are currently being incubated. My assumption is that they are not. After you know for sure that she has no interest in those eggs, remove them. You can try leaving the nest to see if they'll lay eggs in that nest, but you may end up removing the nest too, so they can build their own nest. Sorry about the loss of one of your females. Bless her heart!...See MoreGawdinfever Z6
