Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, takes place in early November in Mexico and around the world, as family members honor their deceased loved ones. Beginning Nov. 1, with Día de los Inocentes, and ending Nov. 2, with Día de los Muertos, families and friends gather, celebrate and decorate to commemorate those who have died.

Observers set up ofrendas, or offerings, often in the form of a tiered altar. Flowers, food, candles, photos of the departed, skulls and other decorations are laid out to remember those who have left this world.
Calacas and calaveras, skeletons and skulls, are prominent symbols during Day of the Dead. From sugar skulls to paper cutouts, these brightly colored versions of the macabre are festive reminders of the celebration of death.

Marigolds and other bright flowers are popular decorations seen on ofrendas or displayed during other Day of the Dead celebrations. Called “the flower of the dead,” the marigold is thought to help guide the dead to their ofrendas through color and scent.

Guillermo Tristan and Melissa Love Tristan celebrate Day of the Dead at their home in Dallas. Colorful textiles and other Mexican-inspired decor create a festive atmosphere. Since Day of the Dead celebrates family, the Tristan family members focus their festivities in the dining room.
