Calling all American Range Owners
Comments (150)donnay - congrats! how exciting - I was asking about the size because we got the 30" and that was where the differences were noted in the specs. My hubby was able to move the outlet easy enough once the range was here but we had placed it according to the drawing. Not a biggie just wanted you to be aware. Also keep in mind, if it is at floor level there is also some height to the legs that gives clearance too. mcferg - glad your burners were an easy fix! Sounds just like something I would do too. amg - great news for you too! Did you place the order! Hope thing progress along nicely for you. Hello to everyone else! We still love our range - no complaints, problems, issues.......See MoreAmerican Range Owners #4
Comments (100)We had our 30" American Range installed yesterday. I thought I'd post about our experience so far in case it may help someone else. I really appreciated being able to read through everyone's posts as we worked through making our decision. We did the oven burnoff last night. It sure put out a lot of fumes. I'm wondering if our hood is working the way it should be. Didn't seem like it. I had the hood going full blast, two windows open, and a fan blowing. What experience did others have during the burn off? I read through all of the threads on this range on this forum and was nervous about this purchase due to the issues with the gas smell from the oven and hot knobs , but we really wanted this range. It met our requirements better than anything else we looked at and was less expensive than a lot of the other pro style ranges. We just couldn't find anything else that we liked. We seriously considered Bertazzoni, but we didn't like the burner configuration, and I didn't think I'd be happy with the oven performance. I called American Range before we made our purchase to query them regarding the issues owners had posted on this site. I was told that the gas problem in the oven was caused by bad valves and that they had remedied the problem and none of the current units should have the issue. They told me they hadn't heard about the problems of the hot knobs. Our appliance store hadn't received any feedback on it either, and they sell a lot of these ranges. Here is what we found while doing the burn in. No gas smell issue, other than the first minute or two the oven was on, which is apparently normal. The sides of the oven got very hot and the cabinets next to the range were warm, but not hot. Hopefully this won't cause any damage to our brand new cabinets over time. The oven door got warm/hot. The door handle stayed cool. The shield that hangs out below the knobs got hot enough to burn skin if it was touched for more than a few seconds. The knobs got warm when we ran the oven, and were hot when the broiler was going. They weren't so hot that I couldn't use them to turn on the burners, but it was uncomfortable if I left my hands on them for very long. The longer the broiler was on the worse it got. The bullnose got pretty darn warm too after the 2 hours of running the oven and 20 minutes running the broiler. I wasn't about to touch the oven vent. We put in the 4" riser vent. We did this because we put in engineered quartz counters and used it as our back splash. I had concerns about the heat venting straight up out of the standard vent onto the splash and possibly damaging the quartz over time. With the 4" riser the hot/warm air vents out the front and the wall stays cool. The air coming out of the vent was quite warm, particularly when the broiler was on. My husband and I are vegetarians so I don't expect we'll use the broiler very much. I purchased a mercury oven thermometer and when set at 450 degrees the oven temp was dead on. I'll be checking lower temperatures over the coming week as I do some baking. So far we love the burners. We have a pressure cooker and the simmer on the small burner didn't go quite low enough for the pressure cooker when setting it the normal way. My husband ended up turning the knob back to the right past the light position to get it low enough. I'd read that suggestion on this forum somewhere. Hopefully there aren't any issues with doing that. I don't know if I'd put one of these ranges in a home with small children or pets that might hang around the range due to the external heat issues. We don't have kids, dogs or cats, so it's not an issue for us. We do have a bird, but she doesn't wander around the range. We locked her up in a room upstairs while we ran the oven last night. I am a little disconcerted about the external heat build up issues, but hopefully the function of the range will make it worth dealing with it. I may call American Range next week to see if they think all of it is normal. Since others have experienced it, it seems like it may be normal for these ranges. Although they did deny the hot knob problem when I asked about it before. That's it for now. If anything else comes up or I learn anything new if I call American Range, I'll post again. Thanks again to others for sharing their experiences on this forum. It was a huge help....See MoreSeeking Capital range owners
Comments (11)We purchased the Capital Culinarian 48” range top in December 2017 from Trevor Lawson at Eurostoves. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area and here too, it is difficult to find Capital units on display. Our local appliance store carries Capital BBQs but does not offer kitchen ranges or range tops. We were told that this was due to “customer service issues”. Having read about Trevor's dedication, knowledge and customer service here and on Garden Web, we felt confident to purchase a Capital range top. The prospect of having the high BTUs and open burners make it the perfect show piece/work horse for our newly remodeled kitchen. The unit was delivered on March 30, 2018. The box and crating material was very dusty and soiled. We weren't sure if this occurred during shipping or if the unit had been sitting in the factory for some time. We discovered that there is damage to a bracket and gas pipe inside the unit. We immediately brought this to Trevor's attention. It is not believed that the damage occurred during shipping. Our contractor believes that when the unit was being gas tested at the factory, the long nipple was still in the unit when it was either dropped, set down or moved. All the weight of the unit was transferred to the pipe and bracket inside the unit. This put stress on the back end of the pipe and bent the bracket and pipe. A straight 90 degree angle is necessary to make a clean connection from the gas line from the house into the gas inlet of the range top. The bend in the pipe makes it impossible to do this. We have requested that the unit be replaced. Not only is there damage to a gas line but we are concerned about the overall safety of the entire unit. We did not pay an as-is or "factory seconds" price. We have been informed by Trevor that whether or not to replace the unit is the decision of Capital (Bob Waymire) and their distributor Almo (Harry Whitehouse). I have communicated to all three gentlemen about our safety concerns and that being left with a damaged unit straight from the factory was unacceptable. There was no response from anyone. Instead, I was left a message from a technician that he would come out and “connect the gas line”. There is no acknowledgement of the possible safety risk of the damaged unit. We are concerned that whatever impact caused the gas line to be bent could have also caused damaged to other fittings. We don't want a technician to try and force a connection or do damage to new cabinetry trying to make it fit. We paid top dollar for a high performance gas range and what we are left with is a “brand new” damaged unit that somehow made it through factory inspection. We continue to want the high output Capital range for our kitchen. We just don't want THIS particular unit. We hope to get a replacement unit and will keep working towards that end. Hope to have a good outcome to report....See MoreIlve stove/oven review
Comments (8)Love the look; works well. Before buying, be sure whoever is installing it has experience with Ilve. They are new to our area, and installation of our 48" Ilve (which was supposed to be the "star" of our completely renovated Edwardian kitchen) has been nothing short of a nightmare. The 20-something installer from Jack's Appliances who "installed" it hooked it up to the gas line and then left us with a large box of "parts" for us to deal with -- the scroll legs, self-cleaning oven panels, rotisserie parts for both ovens, gas adapter (???) for the griddle. I couldn't be more disappointed than if I had a Mercedes delivered with the tires sitting on the curb and told to figure it out. It took a full four weeks for them to look at a cell phone pic and determine that, yep, the self-cleaning panels were not installed in the oven. Ya think??? We're not at 7 weeks and counting. Time to cut my losses and find another installer. :(...See Morelucky998877
