I guess that is why my family always called it cabbage salad, when I was a kid. And my mom made it with poppy seeds. Maybe that’s different than cole slaw - but IMO, that is the best version.

Cabbage in German is kohl. The equivalent in cousin language Dutch is kool. The prounounciation of the two is nearly the same.

Sla is one of a few words used in Dutch for salad.

Menu misspellings and mispronounciations are an entirely different matter. I've long felt that no food place should ever serve a dish they are unable to spell correctly on the menu. Most laughable are how words of European origin, especially from French-Italian-German, get mangled by places trying to be more up-market than they really are.

I was once in a French-ish restaurant for lunch, and the table server came when we were done eating to ask if we were interested in the special French dessert prepared that day, which she pronounced as being

Bay Gun Ettes

I said "can you say that again?"

Same thing said.

I said "How is that spelled?

"I have to check, I'll be right back"

She came back and said "It's b e i g n e t s"

"Oh, that's Ben Yay. Fried dough, like doughnuts?"

"Yes, but it's pronounced bay gun ettes"

My favorite menu redundancy is 'au jus sauce'.

Or, "with au jus", also redundant. With au jus sauce would be a double!
