Rug or no rug underneath dining room table?

Please see attached pics. Thank you! Feel living room space is a little blah. It is smaller, but still wondering how I could enhance this space.

coming From the kitchen it doesn’t see Too bland however i feel it can have much more accent and color entering from the hallway towards the kitchen. Unsure what to do here. Thanks!

What you have isn’t a dining table; it is a pub table.

You don’t need a rug; you need something safe to distinguish the drop in the floor.

That’s a potentially dangerous spot.

Follow the excellent advise of Pro: JudyG Designs.

Alternately, consider adding a corner unit -- cabinet or table or plant stand -- with a level top not higher than the sofa and set it in the low corner at the step.

I'm always team rug. A good rug will always enhance a space. eSale rugs recently added great rug viewer. Upload your picture with a few clicks and you can try many different rugs in your room. If you do find one you like online, order the smallest size available if possible. Then you can check the color and texture in your house without worrying about wrapping a huge rug and dragging it to the post office. esalerugs.com

You absolutely need an area rug. Keep the pattern to a minimum, but get something with the slightest bit of the blue wall color, otherwise that wall color makes no sense. Then I would remove those drapery panels, they don't match and they just look messy. I would remove those 4 framed pieces of art, I would not hang art there, there's not enough room and it's not needed with the window, just let the window be the star of that wall. I would stain that sideboard piece a darker color, it looks too dated in the light wood color it is now. And then you need some large art on the walls, again try to pull in the tiniest bit of that blue wall color, you need to continue to try and make that color more a part of the room instead of standing alone on the walls. And then decorate the top of the sideboard and the dining table.

Personal choice and you'll get different opinions. If you are in an area without snow and you have a mat outside, you could go without. Also, consider a "no shoe" policy. That would cut down on noise also. Finally, you might consider a larger rug that fits most of the living room and sort of continues to the front door area. Again, it is based on circumstances, etc. Some people would never go without one.

And, no, you don't need a rug. Nice space ... except some concern over that corner step down. Do like the square table.

when I first saw the pictures I thought you need to bring the sectional closer to the fireplace and TV.... then saw it was a step down from the dining area. kind of dangerous to do that. maybe you could find a taller bookcase or 2 to place on the lower level and serve as a sofa table, bar and buffet when needed blocking off the step down and getting more storage and flat surface. I think in this case you do need a rug to get some color in the room. make sure it is large enough so that when you pull the chairs away from it that they are still on the rug. pull your favorite colors from the painting to bring somehow into each area (kitchen, dining and living room). looks like you already have some red in the kitchen picture. it should be repeated throughout the whole area that is visible in an open concept area. the pictures are just to give you an idea how just small things in each room repeating a color help make it interesting, unified and keeps your eyes moving in the room. you have so many choices to pick from. what is your favorite? I think changing the rug in the living room would also help. 2 rugs don't need to be the same but should complement eachother.

No rug under the table. I would get a regular height round or square table with normal legs or a basic pedestal base so it's not so dark and heavy looking. Maybe a white table with stained chairs, or a stained table with white chairs. At the very least, you need a dark stained line around the edge of the drop-off to make it visible.
