Why the tiny round rug in the LR? You said there were two rugs in that room? I think either the DR or LR could use a large rug to tone down the striped floors. I would choose color, rather than something neutral. There's a lot of brown going on.

Sheesh. No idea why it cut off my post. But anyway, I put that smaller rug in the living room for the summer to have a lighter look. Clearly the consensus is that wasn’t my best idea! Haha! The rug that is typically in there is a cowhide rug that is much larger and does go under the chairs. Will post a pic of it from a couple months ago.

Cowhide rug is a much better size! Although, if you use it in the winter, I'd turn it an an angle. For the summer, a round rug would be nice. Can we see the rest of the living room?

So, the other rug is a front door rug? I am not liking the stripes running alternate ways. Can you turn the front door mat?

The dining room table turned is a huge improvement. If you don't use those 2 chairs much, I'd move them elsewhere. They look cluttered.

Turn the table; put all chairs around it; add a plain rug that is at least 3’ bigger all around than the table (usually an 8 x 10 is perfect). Consider using the color of the chairs for inspiration.

Is the chandelier staying? It is quite big and heavy for the table.

CDR Design, I'll post pictures of my living room, but there's not much more to see. It's tiny. And I moved the rug in front of the door going horizontally. Better? I need my husband to help me move it under that cupboard. And yes, I like the idea of putting the cowhide rug at an angle. Thanks! I'm glad you like the table going the other direction. I think that was a brilliant idea. In fourteen years in this house that never occurred to me. I thought it would be too long.

Judy G, thanks for the rug suggestion! I do like that rug you posted. Yes, the light fixture is staying. My husband adores it! :) I like it too, although I do think it's a bit too large, but it's grown on me.

If the goal is to cut noise, then a larger rug with a pad in the living room will help. So would doing a rug/pad combo in dining room. But I'd likely remove the armless living rooms chairs and put in an upholstered with arms sofa. For comfort and sound reduction.

All that said, I love the warm cottage feel you've created. Charming and interesting.

Hollybar, thank you for the compliment. We actually had a loveseat with rolled arms in here, but replaced it with the armless chairs because of the small room size. It looks ten times bigger with those chairs, rather than the loveseat. I think your'e right about getting a much larger rug in the living room with a pad to muffle sound. That's probably the direction I'll go first.

And this is pretty much a sitting room. We have a den with a couch for watching TV, etc. I love to read in the living room and we chat with company in here, but it's not really a comfy lounging room.

Hi. I would eliminate the table to that is next to the door. It is in the way and serving no purpose.

Overall, while you may love all of them, there are too many pieces of large, dark wood furniture. They are closing in the space visually and adding to your noise issue. Would you consider eliminating any of them?

you could even do a woven jute in a charcoal color to pick up on that tone in your flooring

Do you really need that front door mat?

CDR, I know you’re right about the large, dark pieces of furniture. I fully expected someone to mention that. I do love them, and they’re special to us for various reasons, but more than anything I desperately need the storage. My kitchen is tiny and this house is a 1900 bungalow with almost no closet space, so they serve an important purpose. I guess I’m willing to have a bit less space and a less than perfect house in order to have it be functional.
I will remove that small table. You’re right. It serves no real purpose.
And my husband came home and loved the new placement of the dining table! I’m really thrilled with what a difference it makes.
I’m going to be out of pocket for a while cooking dinner, etc, but will check back in later. Can’t thank everyone enough for the help!

Quickly, while I have a minute, CDR, don’t I need a rug at the front door to protect my wood floors? I’m a novice at wood floors and have been hyper about protecting them, but no? I do have a good quality mat outside the front door. And also a boot tray out there for wet shoes and boots. Maybe the rug is overkill. . .

Personal choice and you'll get different opinions. If you are in an area without snow and you have a mat outside, you could go without. Also, consider a "no shoe" policy. That would cut down on noise also. Finally, you might consider a larger rug that fits most of the living room and sort of continues to the front door area.

Again, it is based on circumstances, etc. Some people would never go without one.

CDR, do you think this is somewhat better? Since it’s summer, the rug is probably optional. And we‘re 90% no shoes.

I am sorry, but the rug is much too small for the living area. The table looked so good. Please don't clutter the spaces with small decor pieces.

OK, I’ll ditch the quilt on the table and the blue rug in the living room and put down the cowhide rug until I can afford something bigger.

Are you good with the table by the front door being gone?

Yep. I’d say goodbye to the basket also. There are no side tables for drinks. So either add them or remove the clutter on the coffee table.
