Canker or something else?

Hi guys, I‘m trying to figure it out what is this on my pearly gates climbing rose. there are some red/brown spots all over the canes, some spots are turning black. a google search said this could be canker? If it is, what should I do? Should I cut all canes down? or Remove the rose completely? Would hate for this to spread to my other roses...

I used to grow in your zone, and this was a normal look for some of my roses in late winter. I remember being convinced that it was canker, because this coloring was limited to just a few plants. The canes always went back to nice and green with warm weather.

There's an area in the first pic that's a bit suspicious, but I can't enlarge it enough to see the details.

Rogerius, I cannot tell you what the problem is but I'd like to suggest that you re-post with a new heading that attract more attention such as "Please help identify this disease on my apple tree" or something like that. The subject of your posting is too broad. This could be why it does not attract a lot of people. When you narrow it down to "diseases on apple trees". It is likely to catch the eyes of many who grow apple trees and have knowledge to share. You did a good thing by posting the picture. Now you need to re-post with attention grabbing subject line.

It looks a little like a coral bark maple or Sango Kaku, in which case that could be signs of Pseudomonas. In any regard, I'd also recommend taking it back.........nothing good is gonna come from that.

Some of my tomatoes have the narrow dark leaf-edge problem. I've never seen it before. I don't see it on the newest leaves, but the middle and some lower leaves. It doesn't seem to spread, and I'm postulating that it's not related to any of the normal yellowing and spotting on the lower leaves. So I'm not worrying about it. Apparently similar edge damage can occur in other crops with low levels of calcium ... but I doubt that's what's going on here because I haven't seen any blossom end rot.

Yes, I think calling the extension agent is a good idea. The one in Cheyenne is more focused on trees; the one in Denver actually has a little bit of information on tomato diseases and mentions TSWV. Common Tomato Problems A cloud of thrips? How horrid. I just read that thrips and broad/fava beans go hand in hand. I have half a row of favas right next to this tomato row... Regarding the BER, yes, there's been a little while I've been trying to learn to water properly with black plastic down this year. I'm not positive if the triplet and the single above have BER, too, or if the rot from the cankers (for lack of a better word) has converged. From Cornell's Fact Sheet: Although an early study reported seed transmission of TSWV at a high rate in Cineraria and tomato, a later study found only 1 percent infection. The virus is present only in the seed coat and not in the embryo. Seed transmission is thus not considered important for disease spread. Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Regarding the leaves, most everything I read today stated the problem starts with the leaves. I wonder if the problem generally starts earlier in the season, though, when there aren't any fruit present. Either way, if it is TSWV, I imagine it's just the beginning of the end here. I appreciate everyone's input. If I learn something helpful from the extension agent(s) tomorrow, I'll post it here.

Thanks @JoJo (Nevada 9A) thats good to know. i will wait to prune hard if I see the canes not budding out!

A few years ago a rose society friend had this on one of his climbers. He sent pieces of cane to the Michigan State University for a diagnosis. They explained to him that often times black spot spores will overwinter on the canes and cause this discoloration. It is not fatal and will disappear with warm weather. They recommended a spray with neem oil to kill the spores before they grew. Otherwise to just leave the canes alone until you see what you have to prune in the spring.

Those are winter’s kissing marks. :-) I got them on my roses too.

Really? I'm so surprised!! I would have cut those all off. Live and learn! :) Like Dr. Phil says....This is a teaching moment. :) :)

Many of my roses get that look to their canes, too,but I think it might well be heat stress. Often it is only on one side of the canes-the more exposed side. I think it's more common in young or weak plants,so I fully agree with those who say to ignore it,or at most, pamper the plant a bit more in the following season.
