very large living room picture window with molding

Hello! I’ll soon be moving into a new home (once e painters are done) with a large, west facing picture window. It is surrounded by quite a bit of crown molding, and has pretty narrow space between the fireplace and the molding to the left, as well as narrow space between the end of the wall to the right. I don’t believe curtains are an option and will probably need to do inside mount window coverings. Any suggestions on how to make this not look “cold”? I don’t think Roman shades are an option as the view is part of the reason we purchased the house so I’d hate to lose part of it, but we are a fishbowl for our neighbors in the evening. There are roller shades outside on the edge of the patio but these aren’t practical for daily use for privacy as it gets quite windy in our location.

IMO first remove all that molding it looks like FP surround and makes no sense. I think you will need solar shades on that window and it seems to me to be in a strange place too but that might be just the angle of the pic. The solar shades will give you heat and UV control and daytime pricay but at night you will need something if privacy is an issue . IMO roman shades will fit the bill since any drapes will need stack back and that will be too close to the FP Those top windows I would just do staionary solar shades . Get the shades in 10% and the darker the color the better the view so I usually do either bronze or charcoal.

Congratulations!

I’d look into motorized shades ... many types are made for privacy at night. You can get on some blinds/shades websites for ideas, if you haven’t already. They’d be so convenient on such a large window, and there are lots of styles to choose from. They roll up tight, so you wouldn’t be losing much window space/view.

If at some point you want curtains, you could mount them on the molding or above just fine. My current home and last one, I had a corner fireplace with windows as close as yours is, and have always had curtains.

Thank you all. The brackets are for the current winodw treatment & will be removed for any new treatment. I have brilliance pleated shades in all my bedroom windows & love them. I don't have any advice on the window treatment, but a warning. Most sheers become pretty transparent at night with the room lights on inside. If you do sheers, I'd test them at night with the lights on before installing them.

@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout.

They are called hurricane impact windows for a reason. There are strict guidelines for impact AND water infiltration. You need a dealer who specializes in these to get the correct information. As far as burglary concerns, this glass will break but not come out of the frame. Ask a PGT dealer for the pictures from an attempted burglary when a crowbar was used on several units but the glass stayed in the frame. One of our commercial customers showed us and the sheriff’s office surveillance tape of two men throwing a concrete block at the glass. The concrete block bounced back and hit on of the unlucky participants! Yes, the glass shattered but because it is actually two pieces of glass with a triple vinyl inner layer and a specially designed frame that holds the glass in a deeper pocket, it did not come out of its frame.
