Large Picture Window Help..Pictures Attached

I have a large picture window (and a smaller window) in my living room & have no idea what to do with it? (we have a 50's ranch)

I currently have vertical blinds with sheers but want to update. I would like something that offers privacy but lots of light too. I also love the moulding & dont want to cover too much of it up.

Here is a picture when my husband painted & finished the moulding ... please help!!

Separate white wood venetian blinds on each.

I agree - wood blinds. Get real wood, it's lighter in weight than the faux wood.

chris11895 -- that photo IS an inspiration. That space is gorgeous. I would consider a rack for the beauty of it between my cabinets, like you suggested. It does make the space look better in that photo. I don't think I have a need for anything functional in that room. We added the upper cabinets to store all the cleaning/sewing/ironing supplies we have. I still have a lot of extra space in those uppers. The ironing board is hidden behind a standing mirror in our closet (it's within reach of the laundry room when the adjoining door is open.) I do iron in the laundry room, but I don't have the patience to iron often (less than once a week, and even then it might be for 10 minutes!) To the two of you that mentioned TVs, did my husband pay you to say that? :) (I could actually iron in this room and see the TV in the great room from here.) To those of you who envision shelves in this space, would you put white shelves or stained shelves (or something else?) Also, would you put shelves that connect the cabinets or that are smaller width than the 39"W empty space?

I'm loving all your ideas. Keep them coming! Eventually we could add a cap to the fireplace mantle (we have to finish our upstairs bathroom and library first). LOL! My chorus. Yes, it *is*. I hate the fake plants too and I just took them off. Copper trays and pottery. I'll go digging. Les, the sign used to travel back and forth between my BIL and us. Every time he needed money, he'd let us have the sign until he paid us back. Last time (many years ago) he decided he just wanted us to keep it. Well, there are two signs. One is in our bedroom and it's really nice too. The fireplace had a mirror when we moved here but we took it down. It's upstairs in a large closet now. Maybe that was a mistake. LOL! Maybe I should drop the sign down closer to the fireplace? Our ceilings are high, I think 11' but the fireplace is huge. So is the sign. Making the sign a theme for the fireplace? Interesting idea. As far as moving the sign, the problem is there are no other walls big enough and my DH loves it. Maybe when the wallpaper is gone, it may fit better. If I did a box in the center, it would have to be a pretty big box or it will disappear, don't you think? (Think 8' wide. That is what the mantle measures.) I just left my post to fix my mantle and now my entire living room is destroyed. My mantle looks no better yet but the fake plants are gone. LOL! I'm moving around stuff.

Attaching/gluing molding to large wall mounted mirror

I did this - I used liquid nails for mirrors, bought at Home Depot. Here are before and after pics. I also painted the vanity and the cultured marble countertop, applied a top coat of marine grade polyurethane. This was done 2 years ago as a quick facelift, it still looks the same, has held up well! We are planning to replace the vanity and flooring next year, but it made the bathroom less ugly for the meantime. As far as how-to goes, I had to remove the clips and shoot some of the mirror adhesive down the back, replace the clips overnight to let the adhesive set (now glued to the wall). Then remove all the clips, make sure mirror is really secure and then glue the wood to the mirror. I used crown molding for the top. I chose to do square corners not mitered because the crown at the top was not a miter join (though it was a mitered cut to look right). Before After

Pictures first: I would find a place for the large night sky on a wall somewhere by itself where it is low enough to locate known constellations. The other pictures look like they will group nicely and fill the entire wall. Only go above the trim of the grouping looks right, otherwise think of adding a lower floating shelf among the larger prints with smaller pictures cleverly standing against each other to make what you have work together and fit. Now the room: I’m guessing the sofa is across from the mantel (where you’ve stacked the pictures). Is your sofa floating away from the wall, creating a walkway behind the couch? In that case it would look fine centered...but if not, the sofa is a bit large. If it can’t float, try a sofa table behind it instead of the shelf I mentioned to pull it away from the wall a bit.

Thank you..I am most concerned about how the blinds would look since the middle section is 6ft. Do you think that is would be ok? I would love some pictures to better help understand any ideas..

I would get duettes to cover the window...they draw up very flat so can be hidden under a valance during the day and drawn down at night.

Then use dummy panels on the side and a valance over top...either a fabric one or a wooden cornice board.

The brackets would have to be moved up so the valances just skim the window tops, leaving more light and making them look taller.

Wood blinds or duetted would look great. No hanging fabric curtains or sheers. Depending upon your decor, matchstick or bamboo shades would be great. All of these suggestions should be installed within the confines of the molding.

Thank you all. The brackets are for the current winodw treatment & will be removed for any new treatment.

I have brilliance pleated shades in all my bedroom windows & love them.

It may just be me, but wood blinds were very popular when I was growing up and I got sick of cleaning them and restringing them or getting new tapes...they were a total PITA. So when we moved into the old house, though the house came with custom made wood blinds for all the windows, the first thing I did was take them down and stash them in the basement. So I have a real aversion to those things.

I had the duettes up for over 20 years in the old house and really liked them...easy to care for and they only needed restringing when the cat decided to use the cords as dental floss!

But that's me and my experience.
