mounting towel racks on mirrors and/or hard wall tiles?
Comments (2)Thanks Palimpsest for your explanation, sorry to take so long to get back to reply. Your first two paragraphs make sense, and others (builder, bathstore personnel) have agreed it's not a good idea to drill other things into the mirror. We were going to try to choose an alternate lighting fixture for this guest bathroom, but they had already glued the backplate on to the mirror, so we'll live with this one. But at a later date, if we ever did want to change, will that be "impossible" without risking breaking the mirror to remove the backplate? By your last paragraph, do you mean that if we put up a train rack (or whatever... say smaller towel rack or toiletry holder) that required drilling, that we just have to know where the pipes/whatnot are behind the wall before accidentally drilling into them? These tiles, being "very hard", apparently went through a lot of drill bits for whatever they did need to drill for. And presumably a train/towel rack should be mounted to stud underneath too, for extra stability? Actually, at some point I think we'll want to have a grab bar installed... so same points would apply, with extra of figuring out best angle/height to suit most users (being guest bathroom with potentially some heavier and/or older visitors) and ideally also esthetics. Eventually we'll aim to have grab bar(s) for master ensuite too, so whatever we learn will be useful there too....See MoreLarge Mirrors - Framed Mirrors?
Comments (17)At the suggestion of many at GW, I was considering getting a custom framed mirror. I would provide the frame and my local glass place would cut and fit a beveled mirror into the frame. The cost of a 48x30 1/4" mirror which included installing into a frame was in the region of $125, which I though was very reasonable. Unfortunately the frame I ordered online proved to be too disappointing to use so I ended up buying an already framed mirror. My point is that, unless you already have a magnificent mirror, it makes more sense to buy a new one than get an existing one modified....See MoreHanging a wood framed mirror over a wall to wall bathroom mirror
Comments (33)ThatÂs what I was afraid of. I didnÂt want to put ideas in peopleÂs headsÂbut that is the reservation I have. I think having to use it on one side of the wall, asymmetrically, doesnÂt work. I was SO sure it would look great, and be really like the finishing touch in this room. Darn! The thickness, bulkiness, of it bothers me too, in that place. Too much mass. I thought, before I tried it, that it would balance the weight of the solid looking vanity. Instead it just makes it look like too much weight on the left side of the room and nothing on the right. Having to one side bothers me with the light fixture too, and I love that light. It doesnÂt show well in the photos, but is a stained glass repro I ordered from a craftsman lighting company, in a custom size. The mirror is discontinued, so I canÂt get another to balance it better. It doesnÂt look right centered on the big mirror either. Too odd when you are standing in front of the vanity. Sigh. I love this mirror. Buying this one when it went on clearance was what made me decide to have a craftsman bathroom in the first place! (Well, that and it opens off a craftsman family room.) I have one open wall on that room, where I used to have a framed picture. IÂll try propping it up there. The craftsman family room already has a mirror....See Moreinstalling passageway very large molding over door???
Comments (17)I checked out all the possible crossheads. I need a crosshead that would extend at least 67". There are some just a little short and then the next size would be 19" too long. For the shorties, I could use thiner pillisters but the mouldings would then be out of balance. Neither will give a very nice effect, so I thought the best solution is to cut down the longer one. I see that I can have custom made wood crossheads made from internet sources, but these would run ~$250 at least and really be more suited for fireplaces. Trying to cut down and reglue the Fypon would be the cheapest solution. I'm impressed by your house renov album. You've given me some ideas for my home....See Moredgo1223
