Did you know that cardinals can be yellow too?

A rare mutation causes these birds to occasionally have yellow feathers instead of red ones. Never knew this until today, but I must say these rare yellow ones are just as beautiful as their red relatives. If you ever see one, you are extremely lucky.

Yes, there was one spotted in our state near here a couple of years ago. I’ve never seen a yellow one, but I have seen red ones with different black coloring on its head a few times. Apparently that is more common.

I was reading to my daughter from an illustrated children's Bible, and we came to a scene where some ancient Jewish king was killed in his garden . . . yes, I know, a lovely scene to read about to a child anyway! . . . but then I turned the page and saw that in the illustration the desperate fellow was fleeing through formal beds of hybrid teas. No way!!! We also have a beautiful park in town that was especially designed for a "natural" look, with many types of ornamental grasses and species shrubs, rosa nitida, etc. The only false note in the whole thing is three hybrid teas that someone plopped down, all by themselves, at a very prominent juncture along one of the paths. You can tell by looking at them that the designer never intended for them to be there! I'll bet that the man who donated the park and named it in honor of his wife probably insisted on including those hybrid teas because they were his wife's favorite flower, or something like that. I shudder every time I see them!

You Know you have too many seeds when.....

I keep all my seeds in two photo boxes that I bought for 2.99 at Homegoods, one for annuals and one for perennials. I put a through z on 4x6 baggies and stuff the mini baggies of the seeds into the 4x6 envies. They are lined up alphabetical. When I get a package in as I look through it, I sort them into the proper larger envy. I have to say that I can always find what I'm looking for this way. It took a bit to set it up but I have saved time in the long run when giving seeds away. I just have to pull the letter that the seed starts with and viola! Is there really a time that you have too many!

I did not know that! Too late for me?

well you can certainly start sprouting them indoors. Put them on newspaper in a warm place. make sure they don't dry out. Check them and if they are getting a bit wrinkly give them a light mist of water. That will hopefully hold you until planting time and give you a head start. In addtion when you see eyes pop and sprout you will know which way to face them in the hole. (laying flat, sprouts facing up.)

new to me yellow about the size of cardinal

This is very much an oriole. Many orioles are yellow, as there are several different species (most are western birds; there are only two eastern oriole species). That brings me to an important point: please always include a location when requesting a bird ID. Many related species overlap in plumage, and a location can help narrow down a species when a limited view is all we're given. With that said, a quick perusal through any birding field guide/website will demonstrate the variability between oriole species and also within a single species. For instance, only an adult breeding male Baltimore Oriole is bright orange with a black head; the female and juveniles are a duller yellowish/goldish orange with similarly colored heads. I believe that your bird is either a female or juvenile Baltimore Oriole, gauging from the wing markings, tail, and color. This post was edited by TMFF on Wed, Sep 17, 14 at 19:08

It is something when you see a animal that is different then all the rest. When we first moved to TN we saw a white deer in our pasture. It was beautiful & we were told very rare to see.

Yes, I know this, but I have never seen one. However, we do have black squirrels here, which are a mutation of the regular fox squirrels, and also white deer, and I have seen those.

Very cool!
We always have a family of cardinals in our tree shaded yard. The males can be funny. We used to have one that would continually fly at its reflection in our car's window and side mirror.

Did not know that! How cool.

Marilyn, we have black squirrels here. They are very pretty, a lot smaller than fox squirrels. We also have small red squirrels (scrappy looking/ not pretty)--small, but with an attitude! And tons of fox squirrels.

For a couple of years, we had a 'two-tailed' red squirrel in the neighborhood. Really a forked tail. 2-3" from the end of the tail, another short tail forked off from the main tail. Hubster didn't believe me when I told him about the two-tailed squirrel that I had seen, not until he finally spotted it for himself.

Carol, we have a mated pair of cardinals that attack anything reflective on the front of our house. All spring/ all summer. Every day, all day long for the past two years. Garage windows, car glass, car mirrors... As much as I love watching cardinals, this pair is really bothersome. They're not around right now but I suspect they will be back after the thaw. Supposedly territorial behavior; thank goodness for getting a winter reprieve.

The black squirrels here are fox squirrels

There are colors that range from shiny black to charcoal and smutty overcast to their usual grey, trimmed tan.
