new to me yellow about the size of cardinal

I was able to get three pictures of the back and side. He was feeding from one of the hummers feeders, which strikes me as strange, considering that it rained most of the night, and water is standing everywhere, seems he is use to this method of getting water.

His whole body is yellow with a hue of brown on it. A cardinal was a few inches away and the yellow bird was the same size if not a little longer, considering the beak is pointed, he was sticking his beak into the slit on the feeder. His beak is not long like a hummer but longer then most none seed breaking beaks of the song birds, wish I had grabbed my video camera instead of the Kodak, that way you get it all and I could then have made prints of whatever I wanted. this one picture shows more than the other two.

I'll say female Baltimore Oriole (or other oriole depending on where you are).

YouTube video

Orioles like the sugar solution that hummingbirds drink.

All About Birds has pictures but mostly males. If you scroll down to the Field Marks section and click on the arrow there are more pictures of male and female orioles.

Not a oriole, the head back and sides were yellow. i did a color chart comparison that I use for mixing colors when I paint, his color is hard to get right, it's a mix of yellow and brown, with the brown being transparent. when he came back he was so skittish, and only stayed for a second, but with his back completely to me, but he/she, was darker and had a blue hue to it,still seeing a yellowness, but the white looked florescence and light blue. If you enlarge the picture that here and the last you can see that the color of the outer wing feathers has a blueness.

He has never landed anywhere but on the hummer feeders and he seem to imitate the hummers.

"He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler."
Psalms 91:4 NKJV

Question:"Threedodsmom (waht a cute name!), what is the yellow flower in your fist picture? And I love the lush look in your second picture. I see some dark red in there. What are they?" Answer: standard button garden mum planted last fall, blooming now in July. A happy coincidence ! Dark red touches are Jacob Cline monarda, knockout rose new growth showing, and canna "Wyoming" leaves. Second Question: "Threedogsmom, I have those exact daylilies that are in your first picture - rust with bright yellow - a gift with no name tag. I always wondered but assumed they are just a variety of Ditch Lily. Is that right, or do you have some other name for them?" Answer: They are not the common ditch lilies - you can see a ditch lily in my second pic down, to the right, a tall scape towards the front/right of the bed. You can see more pics in the "poised for lily explosion" thread I started. I do not remember the name of the burgundy and yellow daylilies in the first pic, but they have multiplied very well in just 2 years ! Got at Lowe's.

New to Ozark....Please tell me about Hedge Apples.

I have hedge apple trees on my property.... boy do I, and let me tell you, these are my least favorite trees, rivaled only by the thorned honey locusts I have growing. But the hedge apples are definitely worse. For one thing, the "apples" are inedible. There are probably in excess of 100 of them in an area out back between two large trees, and NOTHING, and I do mean nothing has even nibbled on them. The fruits are more like minature bowling balls, heavy with a bad smell, and if you pick them up they'll leak a very sticky sap onto your hands and clothing. The wood is amongst the hardest of any I've ever encountered outside of petrified wood. VERY hard to saw or prune. But per pruning, it isn't the hardness that's so bad... these trees are covered with thorns, and puncture wounds from them seem to have some kind of venom. It's like getting jabbed by a catfish's spines. This fall I took a huge chipper out back and started trying to prune and chip some limbs off these two monster sized OOs. I was repeatedly jabbed, scratched, poked, and stabbed by the thorns, some of which are absolutely huge. When the "fruit" do fall on you, it's like getting hit by a softball. This spring I'm determined to remove those Ossage Orange/Hedge Apple trees and replace them with something enjoyable. The ONLY redeeming thing -- aside from the wood being turbo sturdy -- is they are not a bad looking tree... .. like if you see them along the road in the country. But I cannot even fathom someone actually planting one anywhere near their house. It's the worse tree on my land, hands down.

jacqueline9CA Those are fantastic pictures! I hope I can eventually create something so tranquil. It looks liken you paired it with maybe a Jackmanii clematis? It seems they pair really well together. I actually have been thinking about planting a rose with my jackmanii. Have you had much trouble with them overpowering each other? It looks like it also gets to be in the 15' range for height for you? Do you zigzag it to increase the horizontal lengths to increase blooming? I am trying to think how I could incorporate it with my jackmanii and still get good coverage on the large lattice I have set up. I didn't think I wanted something that would be big.... but maybe I do since I have a 4' by 14' lattice with the clematis, and so far the clematis doesn't fully cover things up yet so it makes me think I could afford to over plant here. Patti W - Thanks for the heads up about potential cane hardiness issues. I am in Boise Idaho, so its naturally pretty dry here, which is nice that disease pressure doesn't seem too terrible relative to what I hear for others around the country. So far this winter we have been mostly in the 20's Fahrenheit for lows, but the last few days have been in the 0-5 degree range for the lows. I am trying to be extra conservative to my already conservative guesses for climbers. Iceberg blooms on old wood I am reading so cane hardiness is definitely something I care about.

Hmm, some interesting suggestions! Thank you all. I have Perle D'Or elsewhere and it's a great rose. Ditto Lady H. I also have Sunsprite but it's too small for that spot for me. Buff Beauty holds down the far end of the border, close to the house with less sun, and it's beautiful although the repeat isn't as good as it would be with more sun. I'm dubious about Austins having slowly weeded them out for not performing but the ones you mention are newer ones aren't they - so maybe they would do better? In cultural notes - that's daff and tulip foliage round the base, and if it was just the base that was spotty I'd just grow something taller in front. However it's the whole plant. If they can't cope with the hurly-burly of a mixed border then they aren't a rose for me, space being too limited for more classic rose beds. Summertime and Goldfassade are both new roses to me, so something to research. I have Isabella Sprunt and Etoile at the front of the border at the moment as I don't know how big they are going to get. Probably, like everything else, way too big for their spots. I have that problem in my slightly older pink beds, which I planted assuming that Beales would know what they were about concerning UK rose sizes. I knew they grew bigger elsewhere... Also apparently here too if happy! Re the early yellows - I have R. Primula in a pot elsewhere, not sure it's habit is great for a cramped border? I also have Maigold, which I got as a small cutting late last year - hmf was not incredibly helpful as to it's habit and I don't know if it would work as a shrubby short climber fanned out at the back? I had xanthina but it very suddenly died this spring, don't know why - leaded out as usual and then rapidly died back over a week - looked like it had dried out but that was not the case.

I would say it is an immature female oriole as well. I had one come to my yard this summer. It is quite pale compared to an adult female; looked kind of yellowish as opposed to the orange of the adults. Because the color wasn't as bright as the orange of the adults, I wasn't too sure if it was an oriole until someone confirmed the ID on this site. And it is usually only the orioles that go to hummingbird feeders and feed on the nectar.

This is very much an oriole. Many orioles are yellow, as there are several different species (most are western birds; there are only two eastern oriole species). That brings me to an important point: please always include a location when requesting a bird ID. Many related species overlap in plumage, and a location can help narrow down a species when a limited view is all we're given.

With that said, a quick perusal through any birding field guide/website will demonstrate the variability between oriole species and also within a single species. For instance, only an adult breeding male Baltimore Oriole is bright orange with a black head; the female and juveniles are a duller yellowish/goldish orange with similarly colored heads. I believe that your bird is either a female or juvenile Baltimore Oriole, gauging from the wing markings, tail, and color.

After going through a lot of pictures, I have to agree with you guys whole heartily about the oriole, the wings do give it away.
That is a first, only time Iv'e seen a Oriole was in Baltimore, MD, Never seen one down here in SC USA.
As for as my location, I'm sorry, I thought it was there, but the Id. mark number didn't forward as it usually does, I'll have to watch that, I live in zone 7, upstate in SC.

Thanks much!
