How high should I hang light fixtures with 24 foot ceiling?
We are building a lake house and it has a great room with really tall (vaulted) ceilings. This great room has the kitchen, dining area, and living room in it. I want to hang a ceiling fan in the living area, chandelier over the dining table, and 2 pendant lights over the kitchen island. How high should we hang these? I know they need to be higher than normal due to the height of the ceilings but how high? Trying to figure it out now so I can find fixtures with enough cord length. Here is a photo of the room.

Comments (1)My suggestion would be to suspend your pendants centered on the upper glass window approx 24" or so down from ceiling. Sometimes, with a pitched ceiling, the light will suspend slightly to the downside of the j box even though the box is centered in the space. I would go for a round shaped pendant under 12" diameter each. My preference would be to illuminate wall and ceiling as well as down. Keep it simple because there will be a lot of them in a line. Comments (3)I think where he is holding it looks WAY too high. It depends on the actual fixture and what is going under the light. If this is going next to a bed I'd put it a lot lower. Comments (2)Well will the curtains be custom or readymade? That might help you decide. While some like a rod under the ceiling, I'm not a fan of seeing all that wall space between the top of the window and the rod. So, there is no correct answer, it's a matter of preference or necessity. It should be at least 4" above the window/molding if possible and can go all the way up to the ceiling, or anywhere in between....See Moreerikaehowell

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoHave you checked out Big Ass Fans (yes, that's the company's name)? Our client's homes generally have ceiling heights similar to yours and I often see these fans spec'd in their plans. Might be worth checking out:
I'm sure they can suggest fan size and rod length based on your dimensions.
