Contractor used red oak plain sawn to match original quarter sawn

It is already too late to correct the mistake. The new installation is over 1000 sqft so it was a pricey project for us. Our contract states that the new hardwood flooring will match the existing hardwood in the rest of the house. Our general contractor told us that he didn't know the difference between plain sawn and quarter sawn. We want to give him the benefit of doubt. But we are very disappointed that someone who has worked in construction for 20, 30 years would not know. And now we have to live with the mistake: for the starter, the two types of sawn have different quality; moreover, these two types of sawn have significant color difference and our new kitchen has more of a pink undertone and you can notice the color difference walking to the living room where we have the original floor. Not to mention the grain difference that really stands out.

The GC came to us yesterday and asked what they can do to make it up. Since nothing can be done to fix the new floor, we were thinking to ask for a discount due to their mistake or lack of knowledge. We were thinking to ask for the cost difference between the two types of materials plus the management fee (20% of the cost). Would like to know whether we are fair and reasonable.

If you have experience with these two types of sawn for red oak, we would like to know whether you have experienced a color difference similar to what we see?
