painted antique gold fireplace surrounds

I would like to paint my fireplace surround antique gold like the photo attached. I'm not sure how to achieve this look. Any suggestions?

Is it wood burning or gas? Does it have glass doors or will the surround be subjected to high heat when in use?

I’m not sure that’s paint. It may be metal sheathing with a patina added. The photo isn’t that sharp but it doesn’t appear to be gold leafing though.

island - I don't miss those fireplace doors at all! :) We'll try and sell them on Craigs List but wonder if anyone will want them. LOL. Yes, we did replace the entire firebox. We purchased a Heat & Glo direct vent gas fireplace and had to pull out the old firebox and reframe for the direct vent unit. There are many styles of doors they offer, and the prices vary. We liked the fancy arched ones, but not for $999! We went with the Folio, clean face front which was no charge. Figured we would put the "savings" toward the flooring. We can always get a nice fireplace folding screen if we want. Check out the Heat & Glo website for more information. www.heatnglo.com. We went with the CLX 6000 model which comes with a remote, nice embers and log set, and a blower. Let me know if you have questions! tinan - Yes, the smell was awful! I wondered the same thing about the noxious coatings. Ugh! At least the smell is gone now. Enjoy your new furnace!

I'll take a couple of photo's of electric tomorrow for ya'll. I have two of them as well as two propane and two real. I seem to like two's :) Oh and two wood LOL Ok so I have a couple of fireplaces. I don't like the electric. They look fake. I'd like to remove both of mine but one is sort of built in so I'll have to wait (it's in a guest room) and the other in our family room is an old one that is half way decent, and puts out a bit of heat and we can't replace it with a propane because of the chimney height (if it's over 30' they can't do it unfortunately). The coolest electric I ever saw was in a house built in 1914 that was done with special light bulbs. It was so so so cool...obviously fake but in such a vintage way it was worth having. I wish I could find one of them...way fabulous :) Anyhoo, I'll take a couple of shots for ya'll with the cell phone tomorrow and see how you like a couple of electrics...and then fly down and take mine LOL

(Frankly, I think the most off-thing next to that mantle is the TV.. the rest, -agree about it being a bit disproportional and all..would leave it anyway won't paint black the area around the firebox-I think will make the firebox look unnaturally high.. maybe to paint the whole wall a darker color. maybe consider a row of tiles. maybe live with it for now as is until figured out don't have problem with the color of bookcases..if they're a bit distressed though then I'd worry a bit more generally, I like the colors together. that's the finishes that might seem strange next to each other. but i can't see the finishes well i'd try to work with it. it's not perfect for that firebox etc yet it elevates the room anyway in a way no simple white mantle would now it seems like the other furnishings are really surprised to see it:) but in a good way. I kinda feel them talking.. sometimes things have to be right. and sometimes for them to be loved is enough. and even better same as with people (but with less grave consequences LOL)

Thank you! I have to get the tile by Monday! I‘m also looking for opinions on tile size. The space is approximately 9’ long by 4’ high. The fireplace is 6’ x 2’. So the tiled space will be 17“ on each side of the fireplace and 12” above and 12” below. Could I use a 12x24 tile or do I need to go smaller? Thanks!

It does not look like paint. Since I do not know all the materials that are used for a fp surround, I would ask an expert.

Not sure if the surround is painted or metal in the photo. Am pretty sure you could achieve at least a similar look with paint but I would be sure to use a high heat paint rated for use near an open flame. You could probably achieve this look by using a stenciling brush and applying several coats of colors that are very similar but different enough to give a mottled effect. I wouldn't cover the surround surface completely with each layer but in a "splotchy" matter and would build layers upon each other. That should give you a nice mottled, aged look. Good luck
