What toddlers want in their bedrooms

What do toddlers age 1yr to 5yrs like in bedrooms? What makes them feel secure and peaceful enough to go to sleep, but also be able to appreciate the space and feel ownership of it? Where is the line drawn between having too much or too little in a toddler's bedroom?

From experience ? Not half of the junk most mommies want to put in there. Before the "stuff" comes a comfy safe bed........some art on the walls. Soft colors, a window treatment that can dim the room. A comfortable sleeping temperature, and that is cooler than you think - no stuffy hot boxes.

The most important thing ? Consistency in nap times and bed times. Same EXACT TIME, every single day, same pre night night routine. Their "bankie," one, soft toy to sleep with that they love. A kiss from mommy and you are out the door which then closes. Same time each day and every evening. This is how they teach themselves to relax and to sleep, whether they chat to themselves or not. No amount of decor, or lack of it, replaces consistency.

You will have the happiest ,and most peaceful child on planet earth. ......and the same child a non cranky joy when awake: ) Add plenty of fresh air/outdoor play........they aren't needing a plastic bubble.

I agree with all the above . That consistancy in bed times is a huge item . As for what to have in there not too many toys they stimualte instead of relax. A couple of favorite books and of course as they age the fave color of the year which BTW needs to be in bedding unless you love painting walls all the time

I read the other responses, but this is what I would do... I would change out the blue color, maybe a limish green or a blue than is more similar to the blue in the bottom butterfly wings on the quilts or the background in one of your pictures. Obviously, not that bright, but more in that color tone. Painting the trim would make it more girlish, but I think you could make some other changes before making that decision. If you have it in your budget to buy fabric, I would cover your beds in a solid color fabric to make the quilts pop more. Try hobby lobby for some cute wall decor. Last year, I found an adorable glittery wood wall letters that said "kisses" in the valentines section. It goes perfectly in my 5 year olds room. I would hang something like that above each of their beds. The dresser needs something cute on it. A little grouping of bears, blocks, picture frames or just something more decorative. You could paint some butterflies on one wall with just a few small pints of sample paint. You can get these at Sherwin Williams for $5 each in their cans designed to help you decide on a color and you can mix them in any of their colors. It would add a lot of pizzazz to the room, and a butterfly shape is pretty simple shapes put together. I would then add some cute basic curtains, maybe in a solid color. whenicit, Thanks, but I need LOTS of help! The other advantage to the 2nd layout in BR1 is that the headboard is rather high and if I put it along the wall, it won't block the windows which would probably be better. I'll see about adding seating when I get the beds assembled. We may have room and it would give me a project to scour antique shops. That is what I'm planning on doing for a nightstand in the second bedroom. A little shabby/chic, beachy. I was going to look through some "Real Simple" magazines for inspiration. I'm not sure exactly what I want yet, but I though a "weathered" table, perhaps in a fun color, would go nicely with the iron bed. ajsmama, Thank you for the suggestion on BR1. I agree that swaping the nightstand is much better. On BR2, I think I could move the dresser closer to the door. The only think I actually don't like about the dresser in that position in general is that I'm not fond of the look of it from the side, but no mater how far forward or backward it is, I'm going to have that problem... White. There's white in the bedspread and lampshades, and I think it will look bright and crisp against the pink. Regarding art, the princess phase is only a few years for most girls. My daughter was in full-on princess mode from 3 to 5, but then entered a rebound phase where she started rejecting all things princess, or pink (at 13, she's now willing to re-add pink to her wardrobe). I love the idea of a blue grey, but you just need to make sure it’s not too dark. Darkness will make the room feel closed in, and you have such great space, you don’t want to take away from that. We painted our son‘s Room a light grey from BM, called Silver Chain...it was so light and airy...and as he’s grown we’ve been able to grow the overall design. Good luck!

We have almost no toys in the kids’ bedrooms. BM Genuine Pink on the walls (dark, lovely color). Fun rugs, but not babyish. Older one picked out her big girl bedspread and I can see her liking it till high school. We’ve always had night lights and white noise machines.
