Comments (44)Lynn - I always enjoy seeing pictures of your lovingly collected and so personal home. They tell a charming story of your lives together! I especially smiled at the photos of your Syrian gaming table. We also have one, purchased by my father in Damascus (Syria) in 1950, and shipped to our home in Chicago. I adore this table and am in fact looking at it now as I type. Anyway, to make a short story long - many years ago, DH and I took a week's vacation in San Francisco (we're in Monterey) and left our 16- year old son alone and in charge of the house. He was and is a very responsible guy and we knew everything would be safe with him. He was very enthusiastic about being left on his own as the "man of the house"! As his project he decided (without telling us) to clean and rearrange our main rooms. When we returned everything was glowing and back in place. Then he told us what had happened. When cleaning, the gaming table's turn came. I had left it exactly as I received it from my mother, with a fairly heavy piece of glass on the top (supposedly to protect the surface). When our son lifted the glass to clean it, a portion of the tiny mosaic pieces, about 6"x3" came up adhered to the glass, but separated, not as a solid chunk. A fairly frightening moment for the kid! He called a friend to come over for moral support. And together, using tweezers and toothpicks and Elmer's glue, they carefully, piece by piece reassembled the damaged part. And you can't tell where the damage occurred. But that was the end of glass on its top! When I've asked DS if he'd like it eventually he's always replied that no, it can go to his older brother, he has spent enough time with it! Its mosaic pieces, for those who can't tell from the photo, are a combination of mother-of-pearl and various woods from the region around Damascus. So pretty!...See MoreMy favorite room
Comments (25)Thank you for the lovely comments. Nini, lol the red party was for a ninth birthday the theme was “a minute to win it”. I am really proud of the parties I throw. Madeline was a perfect party. I got the idea off a blog and it was not hard to prep. I made the capes and hats and a suit case for the girls to hold their souvenirs that they made or acquired shopping in “Paris” and I set up separate rooms through out the house as shops. The girls got to go to the nail salon and spa, the dress shop to pickup their capes and hats, the bon bon to make their own truffles and shop at the penny candy store. they went to the Louvre where they painted on canvases and made Eiffel Tower magnets. Then the flower shop where they painted wooden flowers and clay pots. Then they earned their cooking diploma and ate their make your own crepes and cake at the bistro. It ended with pony rides and bobbing for donuts outside....See MoreMy favorite room - 2katz4me
Comments (36)Love it. And kinda jealous. I've always wanted a north country cottage. My own cottage-y home has ended up more English country than northwoods due to what I have inherited. At some point though, hubs and I would like to at least redo the master bedroom with a north country decorating vibe. The closest hubs and I will probably get to the north country cottage is a camper which is in our long range plan....See MoreMy Favorite Room - Rubyclaire
Comments (43)When i get teased by my friends for avoiding color, I will remember serene rooms like yours! I can't get enough of this look. To me, and I have said this before, "Southerners" have a knack for this kind of decor. I think of it as Cote de Texas, Verandah, and Ballard -esque. I'd describe is as a grand colonial style (hardwood, sturdy simple fabrics, not too much frou frou), infused with heirlooms from the Grand Tour (silver, porcelain, art). I love it....See Moremsmeow
