More and more, that "decorating" word is becoming a dirty word for me. I don't think we need to "decorate" our houses to make them "home". I just think we need to know ourselves and allow ourselves the freedom to furnish our home as we see fit. We can't let outside influences dictate our budget, taste or purchases.

Oh, what a beautiful room and spectacular view! I love the warmth and coziness, the calm colors, the amazing textures. And the fireplace and wood are so wonderfully done. But most of all, your family treasures and things you kept over the years. :)

First, I have a braided rug (I'm a huge fan) in front of the sink in the same color and it's lasted forever.

You've had the pinkish chair for how many years? At least 30, right? How do you keep it looking so good?

You're another lover of multi-colored lights on the Christmas tree! Your picture is proof positive how cheerful they are.

Do you not cover the windows at night? Peeping toms with binoculars would scare me, even on a lake. My mom had those windows in her lake house which was on a cove with no other house around except docks across the way, and it gave me the creeps. lol

You are all too kind and I thank you. I'm glad you think it is inviting because this is a place where we have a lot of overnight guests (well we did pre-Covid) and I want them to feel at home .

I think I may have mentioned on a different post that I have pretty much "make do" decor. We buy a new place - I only buy it if it's pretty good as is and don't change much unless it's worn out. So I've lived with outdated things like drapes when vertical blinds were in, wrought iron railings (that came back in while I lived there) brass cabinet hardware (now in vogue), oak cabinets, etc. And as you can tell I make do with old furniture as long as it's in decent condition. About the only other time I buy something new (which includes used from CL) is if I move and I can't make what I have work in the new space. I very rarely buy anything to hang on the walls because we have collected so much stuff from past travels and I don't really want to put those memories out to pasture.

@oakley - no coverings on those windows - just UV film. There's no one out there that can see into our windows through the woods and if they can - oh well - may they enjoy the view. I don't even close my blinds at home in the city. Most of our windows open on the golf course side and there's not much action out there in the winter and not at night in the summer.

Love it. And kinda jealous. I've always wanted a north country cottage. My own cottage-y home has ended up more English country than northwoods due to what I have inherited. At some point though, hubs and I would like to at least redo the master bedroom with a north country decorating vibe.

The closest hubs and I will probably get to the north country cottage is a camper which is in our long range plan.

I love how your indoor space and outdoor view complement each other. A stunning view and lots of windows can sometimes overpower the indoor space. Your rooms and the outdoor views have a special grounded connection to each other.

I like the uncluttered look that you have - it makes the room much more relaxing. I also love the view of water so close to the house. I would put some outdoor lighting (could be solar) shining on the trees so that I could see them at night. Nice that you do not need window coverings.
