The Old House Paint Exterior

please help! I’m looking for a gray “greige” exterior paint.

Hello, I’m losing sleep over paint colors and driving my family nuts. We have an HOA requiring “Earth Tones”. I would really like a gray or greige color and Alabaster or Dover white trim. I narrowed it down to SW Mindful Gray, Anew Gray, and Colonnade. My roof is an orange/red tile, which I unfortunately can’t change right now. Any suggestions on color and trim?

Colonnade. Just make sure it doesn't shift purple especially up near the barrel tile roof line.

Thank you for your help. I will try to get a sample painted closer to the tile to see how it looks.

I have another question. If we decide to paint an accent color for the rest of the exterior doors....and I'm still not sure this is a good idea...we have THREE different styled doors on the back porch. A solid 6-panel, a single French door, and a double French door. Will painting these a color different than the trim highlight the fact that none of the doors match? My gut says yes, and just paint them the trim color. OR...paint just the main door that exits from the house (the double French) the accent color, thus making the other doors secondary and less noticable? I have looked at tan colored paint chips until my eyes cross, and don't like any of them. Now I'm considering going lighter with a cream. The yellow undertones seem to be the better match, but I want something a bit muddy that doesn't read YELLOW from the street. I thought this would be a fun project, but since we're hiring this job out, there's considerable pressure to get it right the first time. We could repaint doors and shutters ourselves, so if we goof on those, it's not a huge deal, but the trim color has to be right.

Sherwin Williams rolled out new in-store displays that takes organizing their colors by hue family to the next level. The displays are now overtly about hue family first. So, it's pretty easy there. Unfortunately, it's not so easy with other brands. I do have all the BenM Affinity collection colors notated with huefamily over at The Land of Color. You can also try to eyeball it. You want to compare the gray chips to vivid hue parent chips. For example, if you scoot a gray chip that belongs to the red hue family next to a 'primary' red paint chip, you'll see the red pop out of the gray. It's a that which is like unto itself is drawn kinda deal. Whatever you do, do not compare paint chips to a white background. Doing so will skew your perception of the colorfulness. When it comes to comparing color, white is evil. Here's a blog post about why white is bad for comparing colors.

Hello All, Please give me your choices for the best neutral grey color for exterior. I have painted several sample boards - they either read too brown, purple or blue. Looking for the most neutral read with a medium LRV 32-39 please. So far, the best has been Dorian Grey SW- but hoping for more suggestions. I will cross post this in decorating as well. Why is everyone so upset about gray? It’s been around quite some time and I still see it in every multi million dollar model home I tour. If people like it and still use it, it’s not “a dying trend”. And it certainly doesn’t look outdated. That said it is hard to find the right gray for your house. This is what we did - we had the painters paint 2 huge patches of primer on two different walls with different sun exposures. Then I got sample sized paints from Sherwin Williams ($5 each) and painted big stripes on the wall...and make sure you paint next to the floor too! We had about 8 grays and they were all pretty different. Live with it for a few days and decide what you like! Good luck! It’s not easy!

The houses I’ve seen painted grey and white with the orange barrel roof don’t look “right” to my eyes. They are telling two different stories so I hope you get big samples of both house and trim colors to check this out before you decide. If your tired of the peach a cream with medium to dark brown trim would work with your roof and look more updated and fresh.

I hear you, but yes I am tired of the outdated peach look and I do not like brown trim. I am going for this look, which I feel is more modern.

I like it too! I'm in the SAME BOAT. I'm losing sleep. Could you please let me know what color you chose. Here is my house. And, I don't know what to do. I LOVE your inspiration photo too!

Any ideas on a color? Not sure if gray works?! But, I want to give it a contemporary feel too, rather than Tuscany.
