We screwed up - need help with stairs/landscaping for front yard
Comments (20)beware of the "welcome to my garage look that you can get with a wider driveway and less interruption of the view to the garage that the tree now provides. Also consider more than the stairs. Do you want to get more space out of your small front yard for purposes other than mowing exercise and a foreground to your house? If so, consider a retaining wall or more than one with a walkway and steps incorporated through it. I don't know if this street and/or your personality makes it such that you would want to spend time on that side of the house or not, but you should go through that mental exercise. I don't have a problem with bisecting the lawn to make a walk/stairs that would re-center the attention of the curb view of the house from the driveway to the front door....See Morequestion about attic stair insulation
Comments (2)I built my own using a 4 X 8 sheet of 1 inch foam insulation. I found a set of plans to do this. Here is a link which has a similar plan. You can use even thicker foam insulation if you want a higher R-value. http://www.jacksonemc.com/Do-it-Yourself-Energy-Projects.43.0.html You may have to modify it a bit to fit your stairs. It was not very difficult to build. I put down weather stripping on the wooden frame. The box sits on the weather stripping which makes a tight seal. I even used the left over pieces on the sides in order to give it extra strength and weight. When I go into the attic I simply push the box so that it stands up on one of the long sides. To close I just lower the box into position onto the weather stripping. For about $25 you can build a custom fit cover. I think the key is the tight fit to stop air infiltration. I am not sure how good a job the store bought versions will do....See Morefantasy kitchen fireplace and stairs
Comments (8)To Post a photo on the forum: Go to TinyPic.com and BROWSE til you find your photo on your computer. Then resize if necessary (see below) and then click on DOWNLOAD, then click once on the top address line to copy it, then paste it into the "message" box on the forum. When you Preview the message on the forum you will be able to see if the photo size is acceptable (too large makes all posts as wide as your photo and that can force others to scroll to read subsequent messages). photo size: The image size limit at TinyPic is 1600 pixels (either width or height). Images that are too large are resized by TinyPic to the largest acceptable size. Use the Resize drop-down list on the Upload page to resize an image before uploading it. Acceptable images are: jpg, png, gif, base 64 encoded image, or bmp. I think the photos on TinyPic are deleted if they are not opened for 90 days. There is a "test forum" under "instructions" at the bottom of this page if you want to actually post the photo and see how it looks. Comments (14)David thanks for your reply. I too don't disagree with any suggestions as I am always open to ideas, but for right now I think simply painting the walls and perhaps the upstairs hallway the same color would be the best option for us. I do love white trim, but with a few different rooms having a nice beige/tan color with the wood trim, I really want to keep those intact. So if I switch in one area of the house, I will have two sets of trim and I am not sure I want that as it will force me into having to make determinations about the transitions from room to room, doors, etc. Not to say in a couple years I wouldn't want to tackle that, but with us having a baby, I don't want to take on too much. I am curious about the steps as well. At least the exposed portion of the first 4-5 steps leads me to believe there could be something decent to work with. Priariemo61 - i will look into that color - Thanks for your advice!...See MoreNita B
