fantasy kitchen fireplace and stairs

i have found the fireplace i've had in my head for the past forty some-odd years. i had a childhood memory of it and didn't know if it was from a story book, dream or past life or what!!

i recently borrowed an old movie from the library---and there it was! it's from the 1963 cinderella starring leslie ann warren.

our remodel will start in about a year, i am starting the research to bring this firepalce and stair design into 2011, with the commensurate eco-advantages and design sensibilities.

first, it needs to be super efficient, helping to heat a two story kitchen/bedroom addition. plus dh wants to be able to bake bread in it as well, so a rumford style firebox is what i'm looking into. while the fireplace will be the focal point of the kitchen, the staircase will wrap around the back of it and be the focal point in the entry way, so they need to be substantial enough to carry it off. the house is a quirky take on a vermont farmhouse already, so this will be a super addition i hope.

the design/builder i've interviewed is excited about it, and has built some super rumford fireplaces and interesting homes, so i'm encouraged that it can be done.

i'd love to show it off and get some feedback on how to tweak it to make it a great feature in my home. i already know the stairs need to be wider and less steep, but we have only ten feet in which to work, so it's going to be a challenge indeed!

i have figured out how to get a pic in my computer, but haven't yet figured out how to upload to this site. i can email it if someone here is willing to try for me.

You can't upload pics to this site. Store them elsewhere, e.g. photobucket, flickr or some other host, and incorporate appropriate html links in your posts.

To Post a photo on the forum:
Go to TinyPic.com and BROWSE til you find your photo on your computer. Then resize if necessary (see below) and then click on DOWNLOAD, then click once on the top address line to copy it, then paste it into the "message" box on the forum.

When you Preview the message on the forum you will be able to see if the photo size is acceptable (too large makes all posts as wide as your photo and that can force others to scroll to read subsequent messages).

photo size:
The image size limit at TinyPic is 1600 pixels (either width or height). Images that are too large are resized by TinyPic to the largest acceptable size. Use the Resize drop-down list on the Upload page to resize an image before uploading it.

Acceptable images are: jpg, png, gif, base 64 encoded image, or bmp.

I think the photos on TinyPic are deleted if they are not opened for 90 days.

There is a "test forum" under "instructions" at the bottom of this page if you want to actually post the photo and see how it looks.

I don't have exactly the same situation as you, but I am mixing up my stains. We have walnut hardwoods, which will be poly'ed without a stain (the boards vary in color from blonde to dark). My kitchen cabinets and fireplace mantel are going to be painted white. My kitchen island and the built-in hutch-style pantry will be stained a dark "boot polish" brown. For the stairs, the treads are walnut, the risers and the bannister spindels are white, and the loaf-style rail and chunky end bannister spindle will be stained the same dark boot-polish brown of the island and hutch. Painting/staining should start next week. If that schedule holds true, I'll try to post some pictures.

Holly that is what we did when we did our kitchen last year. The freestanding Valor was already there from when we had opened the fp in the kitchen and MBR during the 1st remodel. When we had the kitchen gutted to the studs we found 2 brick chimneys. One was where the sink was and the other was the one that was hidden in the wall and we already had the mantle there and the Valor. So we recovered the one where the sink went and I got up on a ladder and stood on the mantle and cleaned the mortar off and coated the exposed brick with a couple coats of water based poly. You have to do that so the brick dust etc doesn't drift down. I had a huge shop vac from my contractor and wore a mask . The cleaning of the brick makes a MESS. But it was worth it. I love the look. It is a main focal point of the kitchen. Please post pics. you download to Photobucket and then make the album public or click on the 3rd line down under the picture and then cut/paste it to the message here. It is easy and there are several tutorials for posting pics here. C.

OT -- Fireplace Surround (Seen from Kitchen)

Erinct, I wasn't trying to lay down the rules of OT etiquette. To me the topic was in a grey area and I argued with myself a bit on whether to mark it OT or not. Sorry to hear about the poison ivy - that can be hard on the sufferer and his family. I hope he is feeling much better now. For textural and informal, someone had a fireplace with long thin stone kind of stacked on edge. To me, the pictures that you posted look pretty formal because of the style of the wood columns, mantle and, on the top one wall detail above the mantle. Here's our fireplace waiting for the surround Here is a close-up of the fireplace with a sample of the stone for the surround, cherry door (right material, but in the kitchen door style), and a piece of the maple flooring. We don't have a sample of the black stone that will be the hearth extension on the floor. Our surround will be pretty simple; just the stone covering the drywall under the mantle and a simple thick cherry mantle. The family room cabinet doors will be in this style, but natural cherry:

Thanks Irish. I did that before I posted. Almost none had what I was looking for. Most were how to transform the oak rails to white. My oak is honey oak. Which shows up exactly right on the google searches. I was hoping someone here had pictures.

i cannot yet, though not for lack of trying! i can email them though, that seems to be working ok. if you want to look it up, i gooogled cinderella/leslie ann warren/movie and found a song cinderella sings on front of her fireplace. of course her fireplace is dirty and inefficient, hence her name,lol!
i plan on something similar in style with a super rumford efficiency design.
the staircsase which sneaks around back of cinderella's staircase is sort of a back kitchen stairsway, mine will need to be more suitable for the entryway of my home, so the designer and i have our work cut out for us. but at least it's a place to start!

we are making progress with our plans, though i am back to wanting it in the corner again.
the staircase will be in the main entry, but i want the fireplace to be in the northwest corner so the big table can go in front of it, and for ease of wood storage--the door to the wood bin is right there.
i also want to use white brick instead of the red.
now how far off the corner do you think i need to plan for? at first i thought 5ft, but now i'm thinking maybe only 4ft will be enough.
again, thanks for posting it, i know it's silly, but i love that fireplace!

I loved that movie and it was always my favorite - especially those wicked step sisters. What a classic. The fireplace sounds wounderful - I am however a tiny bit skeptical about the "white" brick. Do your research and I'm sure it will look great
