Tape off the outer dimensions on the wall with painters tape. Easy enough to visualize how it would look either way doing that.

Thanks! I thought taping it would be an ordeal, but only if I did it by myself. Lol!!! Luckily, I have help! Here are the results. I think definitely centered between the door and the wall. What do you think?

I agree that centered between the wall and the door looks better. But before you commit, consider what else you want to put in the room. If you had a cozy chair to put in the corner (with the entertainment unit shifted toward the door), it might make a nicer conversation grouping with a sofa opposite the unit..

are you planning on doing any trim around the opening? if so, you'll have to move the unit a little further to the left (Pic 1 and 2)

if it's off center a bit, then put a chair or a plant in the corner.

where's the sofa going? do you have that ?

Thanks for the feedback! The furniture placement is going to be tricky, and I realize that will be partially determined by the location we decide for the entertainment center. There is a wall of 3 separate closets on the adjacent wall to the left, and a very large opening to the dining room/kitchen on the right. This is a pic from the dining room looking in.

We do not have any furniture for this room yet, aside from the entertainment center

so there are 4 doorways into this room? anything you can do w/that?

does the 3 closet room need to have such a huge opening? if you close that down you'll have a better space for the sofa, or the tv.

i'll also add it's the only opening w/that heavy dark trim. I'd remove that and do simple white casing on all openings

We are for sure doing away with the black trim! Lightening everything up! This house was added on to several times, which is why the layout isn’t what one would consider ideal. The wall with the large opening/thick black trim was actually an exterior wall at one point (the room in question didn’t exist then). At a point after that, the wall that will have the entertainment center was an exterior wall. Then they added the master suite onto that which is the doorway to the right of the entertainment center. I like the “open” concept with the large opening, but I also realize that comes to the detriment of easy furniture placement decisions. Only 2 doorways into the living room. One from the dining room, one from the master bedroom.

You may be able to float a sofa in front of the red wall. it's just hard to tell from your photos.

You'll be adding a door frame to your doorways -- with or without a door. Do keep that in mind as you measure what fits where.

If you decide not to center it, and depending upon the depth of your entertainment center, you might consider setting the left side of it against a corner cabinet that fits in the corner between the red wall and the door in the adjoining wall.

You can put chairs in front of an entertainment center but wouldn't put a sofa there without being able to walk between sofa and entertainment center ... and you do need to keep walk paths open. You might consider getting some painter's tape or chalk to help you visually create your walk paths through the room on the floor to see what you have left for furnishings.

What are the closets going to be used for?

Closets are for storage, since there is no basement.

Instead of tape, consider using one or two sheets of styrofoam insulation to cut into rough footprints of furniture. Inexpensive and easier to move around!

I assume since you already own the entertainment unit, that is where you want your TV, and it looks like the red wall is the only choice for that. It's hard to envision without the dimensions of the room, but is is big enough that you could but a couch opposite the red wall and then float a loveseat or two chairs in front of the closets, leaving enough space behind them to open doors as needed? Or alternatively, use a loveseat on the side opposite the closets, so it's backside defines the walkway from the master bedroom into the dining room?

L.D. Yes, the entertainment center is what we have in our current house and will be moved here. That is the only living room furniture that will be moved from the old house, so we have some flexibility in finding something that fits the space. I’m thinking the same in terms of a couch across from the entertainment centerand then either a chair to kind of define the walkway and maybe a love seat in front of the closets. Or vice versa depending on how it all looks. Great idea with the foam! My significant other would not be on board with trying to rearrange taped furniture lines!
