Sherwin Williams white flour on trim and doors. What to paint walls?

Would like advice on white paint for walls and cabinets. Our doors and trim are Sherwin-Williams White Flour and currently we have dover white on the walls. The dover white looks a bit yellow in our bathroom so we'd like to lighten it up. The bathroom is also on the small side and no natural light. We also are painting our cabinets white. We're looking at SW alabaster white and SW greek villa as they seem to complement the white flour trim and doors. Is it ok to paint the cabinets and the walls the same color? Any other suggestions on a white that would compliment the white flour?

Marylee H, these color wheels are fascinating and I am intrigued! Where did you find these? I am trying to choose an off white for my walls and am thinking of these colors. Unfortunately, I have so much orange wood furniture in my bedroom so I was wondering if I should choose a color that leans toward orange. Do you have any thoughts on this? It is a bedroom with southern exposure and the curtains are usually drawn. We have warm light bulbs. Thanks.

SW Dover White has enough difference in Chroma compared to SW White Flour that it doesn’t look dirty sat next to it, even if you find it too dark (Value) and too colourful (Chroma)

But neither Alabaster or Greek Villa have enough difference in Chroma compared to White Flour to ensure that they will look crisp alongside it.

You may get the impression they feel dingy by comparison as they don’t offer enough conrast. A minimum difference in Chroma of 0.2 helps when using more than one white in a space.

It should look fine. Most people don't notice ceilings, and it's fine if it's a little off. Worst case you hate it and you can repaint the ceiling later on.

And I also caution you to evaluate your paint with all samples of all hard elements together - so any wood, stone, tile, carpet, major textiles like sofas, bedding, etc ALL together at the same time...again, pure white is great for cabinets and trim but something soft and not so bright for the walls will look more pulled together and ‘finished’. Your first inspiration pic where all walls and trim in all one color is not a bright white like Pure White. Your second inspiration pic which shows only trim/wainscot is probably a brighter white like Pure White however then I ask what was the wall color used with it and with what other fixed materials? If you want a complete white on white look like your first pic you will need to go darker than Pure White (IMO and Maria Killams:)

I wouldn’t go with the creamy white. As you can see in your photos, whites when next to each other, can look so different. I painted a condo in SW Alabaster White and although it’s subtle, the white on my cabinets and the while on the walls do not match. Here’s a photo of my kitchen so you can see what I mean.

I'm looking for a neutral gray/off-white with an LRV of 70-75 that doesn't read purple (many grays and grieges do!), blue, or pink. I don't want a throwback to "builder's taupe." And after seeing White Duck on the wall in my house, I'd definitely characterize it as tan. In photos online, it looks like a warm off-white with a hint of green. In my house, it's brownish beige. I might have liked it 20 years ago.

I would use White Flour on walls, trim and cabinetry only in different sheens.

Hi Louise - these are Colorographies from The Land of Color.

See these and many more in their Colorography Lab. Also check-out the blog and other colour tools there. You may find the approach quite an eye-opener,,🌈

Choosing further colours from the same Yellow-Red Hue Family as your wood is certainly a viable option. Together they would form a monochrome palette. They would share a degree of Parent Hue DNA.

But this only one way to create harmony in a space. You are in no way obliged to do so. There are many other ways to create harmonious connections within a space.

Choosing colours (you mentioned off-whites) from the neighbouring Yellow Hue Family would form a Diad palette with your wood.

I would be more inclined to begin here.

Marylee H Thank you for the color theory. One more question. What color will be the wood panels in the color wheel. I like to choose harmonious effect as per color theory.

I need to choose a white paint color for my kitchen cabinets that opens to family room of wooden panel walls.Really struggling to choose a color.

These are from the Yellow Hue Family.

It depends upon how light + how colourful, or near to neutral you wish to go + what your inherent lighting can best support?

If you have lower levels of light, slightly more colourful whites may feel less gloomy than the most neutral types of whites.

Extra White is from the Green-Yellow Hue Family.

Chantilly Lace is a very near neutral white from the Green-Yellow Hue Family.

So for lower levels for light you suggest top 3 or below 2 neutral whites. Sorry a bit confused.

For lower light levels colours with a punch of colour can help cut through the gloom often better than very near neutral whites. How colourful you want your whites to be is up to you & what works best with your available light.

i would sample one from the top 3. (more colourful) + one from the bottom. Then you will onow which type you prefer more.

Thank you . I tried chantlily it’s good but bright, cloud white is very warm . We have three skylights and at night I have daylight bulbs . So very bright lights are there. Need to get samples from top 3 . My eyes used to that dull beige and old almond color. So anything white looks very bright

White Flour is a lovely, colouful white, whi due to its Hue Family location may show a peachiness to its warmth. It sits nearer to your wood panelling so will have a connection there, but it depends if you enjoy a more colourful or more neutral white?
