Has anyone put Nordicseal over a coat of Country White (on red oak)?

We have old red oak floors and the Nordic alone looked pink and "painted" and the Country White looked yellow. I liked the sample with one coat of CW and 2 coats of Nordic but wanted to see if anyone else had done this. Thinking will do a matte finish.

Hi! My sanding/staining started today, will let you know how it does. Planning to do 2 coats of nordic seal and 2 coats of a finish. Not sure how it will turn out!! SO NERVOUS!

Me too!! I'm hoping to make it lighter with two coats of nordic seal and one coat of matte or satin finish, not sure which yet, but am worried about the pink coming through, which nordic seal says it doesn't. The other option is to go into dark grey possibilities, but I'd rather not. Could OP let us know what they came up with and how it looks please?

"Rubio fumed" reacts with the tannin in oak to make a grey-black color in the wood. You can sand it lightly to remove some of the color, then put a pale finish over it. Red oak has less tannin than white oak, but it would be worth testing the stuff on a sample to see what happens. (They are not explaining the ingredients, but I assume it's using a ferric acetate solution like the popular steel wool and vinegar DIY ageing method) Here is a link that might be useful: RTubio Fumed on red oak :)

Thanks for the reply. I think the issue may have been that I didn't save deep enough with my palm sander for these test boards. SJ I believe water popping can only be done with water. Mineral spirits is used to clean/tack the floor and it won't pop the grain. I also did a test board of water popped red oak vs non water popped, with water popping the dura seal stain came out insanely dark.

It is normal. The small exposure of the end of the planks when it was stained DARK (how many years ago?) is to blame. There isn't much to be done. Every time you do a full sand (3 grit levels) you remove 20 years of life off of your wood. If you try to get rid of this tick of colour (which 99.99999% of people will NOT notice...even if you point it out to them) you can and WILL reduce the life of your wood. This is one of those 'meh' moments. The decision to go DARK some 15-20 years ago set up this situation. Let it be. There are worse things out there then a hint of left-over stain colour in a wood floor....like a roof that needs repair...or hurricanes...tornados...ground water contamination, etc. In 6 weeks you won't even remember what it was that made you nervous.

Hi @chrissysue52 I ended up using Country White + Fruitwood, 50/50 mix. Or rather that's the colors I gave to the contractors to do the floors. They definitely look different, although everyone's eye and taste will differ. Photos show the difference between regular red oak nonstained, and the stained. Left is the start of the stain. The team had to stop this area because they found water damage elsewhere in the house. You can see how it looks when it starts. This is different than my samples looked, but I guess it's right? The stairs on the left are stained and have two coats of water poly. The floor on the right is still just red oak no stain.

Hi Sarah! Yes, we are waiting to move into our house because our flooring guy just isn't showing up! We have red oak on top floor and white oak on bottom floor. Hoping to do 1-2 coats of Nordic with 2 coats of satin finish....... what pricing are you getting for sand/stain and where are you located?

Any results/pics from this group? We are in the same boat - trying to marry up red oak and white oak on two different floors of the house and trying to achieve the natural color while muting the pink in the red oak. Would love to know what combo worked for you all.

Here are two coats of Nordic! Looks awesome snd pretty light. The image with 2 floors is the right side is white oak and the left side is red oak. We used Bona mega instead of HD as cost savings, might do an extra HD coat ourselves if we need it

Hi Jenn A! Sorry I just saw your message. I’m in Ohio. My flooring guy tried the Nordic white and it turned out beautifully but I decided to go crazy and went all dark with the gray! Last coat/Traffic HD goes on today and I’m being soooo patient not stepping on anything! Lol for a house 4,000 sq ft it came up to about 7,5k, but I didn’t do the bedrooms. Also it was crazy the gray didn’t saturate at first take so we had to put in two coats of it. Otherwise it was 6,8.

It looks beautiful !!! How many coats of HD did you put? We actually ended up using 2 coats of BONA Mega clear Instead but now wondering if we should add a 3rd coat or just leave it

i know this is an old thread but i was hoping Jenn A. or Sarah might answer. We have the same issue with red oak upstairs and on the stairs and white oak downstairs. Our white oak was damaged and has to be replaced so we were hoping to go with a lighter (non red/non pink) stain on all the floors. We’ve been told by our flooring guy that its impossible to match the red oak and white oak to be close enough in color to look good if we go lighter. We’re thinking we’ll have to replace the white oak with red oak so there will be continuity. How do your floors look between the two floors..is it a jarring difference between the red and white oak or is the difference ok in your opinion? Thank you..losing sleep over this decision…

The difference is totally okay!! I did 2 coats of Nordic seal and 2 coats of bona mega and in one place it’s actually side by side and looks great!!

Thank you so much for responding…your floors look amazing and its encouraging to hear a success story. Is there any way you could post a picture where the white oak and red oak are visually close to each other. Our flooring pro is balking at the idea and its not possible for us to switch to someone else..long story. Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Stacey! Please scroll up in this thread to my post from “9 months ago”. The first image is the floor side by side. It is not 100% perfect but it doesn’t look bad plus it is wide plank(white oak) and narrow plank(red oak) side by side. Thank you..I know its a pain to post photos. We were also thinking of changing plank size on the new floors so thats helpful. Your red oak floors look great and not pinky..do you feel like those pics are a pretty true representation? Did you adjust the formula at all between the two types of wood or 2 coats of Nordic on both? My contractor wants to use Mega but Ive been pushing for HD..how do you feel the floors have been wearing so far? You've been so helpful..thank you!
