Great thread! I wish I had that much space to work w/ in my kitchen! Mine is only 11 x 12'! I'm about to put a hanging pendant in front of our two side-by-side windows but we have a thick piece of wood between the windows so that helped me decide to just hang one there. The thing is, I don't know if I'll get one pendant or the shower kind that has an upside-down T shape w/ two lights hanging off of it. I thought it would be fun to have a light in front of each window instead of just one boring light, see? ;) So my instinct told ME anyway that it's preferable to have one light before each window. I do think since I have that extra space between the windows, that just one pendant would look nice too though. Below I'll include a pic of the area under the windows. The extra holes in the ceiling are just from when the electrician was feeding the wire through (they're not for any lights). The other light hanging in the main ceiling will go away and be replaced with something better suited (it's a 1913 house). Maybe a semi-flush mounted light (if that's the correct term) or maybe even the kind that has 3 shades hanging from showers, as long as I don't let it be too long. I live near both Schoolhouse and Rejuvenation House Parts (local co.) so it's fun to have so many choices, including real rewired antiques at some other stores! Kala, I was trying to find those scallop designs on their, but all I see now are them in the cement. However, they do have these great colors in the 3" hex. (these come in subways and 2 or 4" squares. I thought they came in the scallop design too. Similar ones I found at Mercury Mosaics were in the $86 sf range! and the comment above, w/the Fireclay tile mosaics, are also above the $45 sf range. if you have a healthy budget, I can find you some beautiful tiles!

Make sure your island pendants don’t have too much glare for someone sitting at the island. The style of our lights (different from yours) is the same over the sink and the island. The light over the sink was fine, but the glare was horrible when sitting at the island - no problem when standing around. It never occurred to me this was a potential problem. Fortunately bulbs with covered bottoms - which I had never heard of - solved our issue.

" Most cabinetmakers, custom or otherwise, don't really understand aisle clearances, seating overhangs, etc. Their focus is on the construction of the cabinets. It's the designer's responsibility to ensure a functional space is designed. Yes, many cabinet salespeople call themselves "designers", but they aren't. When I say a "designer", I mean a KITCHEN designer educated in good design practices. E.g., what are the actual aisle widths b/w the items that stick out into the aisles the farthest -- e.g., appliance handles, counter overhangs, etc.? That's your true aisle width, not cabinet-to-cabinet like so many cabinet salespeople show.
