Replacing OTR Microwave, hood questions?
Comments (2)Yes, this should work just fine. This is what we did. I love it and realize I am more comfortable at the stove without the microwave in my face! There are websites where you can narrow down choices with your dimensions very nicely. AJ Madison is the one we used. Ultimately, we didn't buy from them though. Our open space between the two cabinets was 31 inches, but there is a gap on either side of the vent that is at least an inch total. If we only had 30 inches it would have fit cleaner. The height from the counter top to the bottom of the upper cabinet above the vent is 33 1/2 inches. This puts the vent hood we used at 26 1/2 inches from the its bottom to the counter top. The hood you purchase should tell you the correct placement needed for proper operation. Our is a Sharp Insite. I love the lighting on it, its quiet, and can go to pretty powerful levels. Here it is in our kitchen. Ignore the strange green cast on the backsplash. That is not there in real life? Comments (4)Manufacturer's preference primarily. Microwaves (even ones combined with a kitchen fan) are "expendable" consumer items and tend to be cord-and-plug connected. Hoods and regular stoves/ranges tend to be "fixtures" and hardwired, but that's not a rule....See MoreHow do I vent my range hood or microwave from my kitchen
Comments (1)Exposed ductwork in an older home can be quite charming. It gives it an evolved over time feel. Or, it can be hidden within the cabinets. Either way, it will have to go straight up and then left to go out of the building. I'd do at least an 8" duct, as that gives you more versatility than a 6" duct. 6" limits the possibilities down the road. Doing 8" now instead of 6" won't increase the cost but a couple of dollars, and you could possibly do a higher BTU stove and vent at some point if that interests you because the infrastructure would already be done. Comments (11)It comes down to space and money. I have a small kitchen but decided to go with a microwave drawer because I didn't want OTR microwave and I didn't have sufficient counter space for it to live on. Having it OTR is very much a compromise - it's not as good as a dedicated hood would be and it also is a bit high for comfort if you aren't tall. I suspect that it also is subject to premature aging if one does a lot of high heat cooking. My ideal - if I had space - would be to stash the microwave in a cubby with a pull out landing strip below and have it at optimum height but the configuration making the most sense was under the wall oven. FWIW, based on my research Sharp makes all the microwave drawers which are then rebranded so there isn't any particular reason to pay for the "name". As others have posted, you do want one with the tilt out controls because otherwise you would be obviating the ergonomic advantages since you would have to squat to read the controls....See Morelindalana 5b Chicago
