Need more help with breakfast room layout
Comments (6)I really like round tables, and have 3 round tables. My outdoor dining set is a 5' round with 6 chairs. The coffee table in my sunroom is a 4' round. The breakfast table I am going to replace is also a round. Since I already have so many round tables, I feel like it might be a nice change to get a rectangular table. (The trestle table I posted is a bit expensive though..) Besides, my formal dining room (which is currently empty) has a square shape (about 14' x 14'), which seems to lend itself well to a 6' round table.. Of course a 7' x 3.5' rectangular table would work just as well in this room, but I am a little afraid that I might end up with a round table in every room. On the other hand, if a round truly works better in my space than a rectangle, I think I'd just go for it. Even though I am pretty sure 6 will be the max, I cannot help but keep thinking that the rectangular might be a little more flexible. Say I happen to have 8 people (very very unlikely but not impossible), I could add two temporary chairs to the two ends.. Comments (2)Have you tried the chairs with the arms under the table? In my experience, chairs with arms are a pain at so many tables as they bang into the table and don't allow you to scoot up well. The chair you pictured is very attractive though, and the arms look low, so maybe it's not a problem. Just thought I'd mention it....See MoreNeed input on finishing touches for family room
Comments (35)Yes, that is exactly where we started with Les' arrangement--except there would not be enough space behind the sectional for the bookcase as it would put the sectional too close to the TV. The room is only 17' long. It did not work for us--as we are a family of five with two teenagers and there was too much contention for seating when watching the TV. Having it this way so we have an extra chair facing the TV works so much better and when we had friends over for Thanksgiving who'd been here before we switched it commented how much more spacious it felt. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the kitchen table really is quite close to the family room so putting any furniture in the middle closes everthing in and makes for awkward walkways. Here's a couple before shots so you can see what I mean: I tried the sectional as Johna had suggested earlier, while it looked better, unfortunately the sectional is not oriented best for that (there are two pieces that butt up to the back wall) and would just come apart (think teens that are not overly gentle on the furniture and like to lounge here)--so reality having it pushed against the wall is the most practial solution. We just had the electrican over two weeks ago to get the cable moved. I tried moving the bookcase down further, but it looked squished since part of it looked like it was hidden by the console/TV and it's so pretty that I want it to be visable from the kitchen area. I could probably center it under the window, though if I remove the floor lamp--which is a possibility since we do have recessed lighting for this room. So, no one is liking the dried flowers from Michael's? I need to go there later today so am wondering if I should return them or not....See MoreMy family room and breakfast nook need help!
Comments (33)Sorry for the delay in responding. I have a senior graduating from high school this month and we have been busy with senior activities. I'm not feeling the whitewashed on the brick. Too country I think. I'd like to tone down or get rid of the pink altogether. I definitely don't like the black surround. I agree with Grover that it looks like a big black hole. I finally opened the fireplace screen (first time doing so!) and it's so dirty inside the box, I don't even want to go near it. Not sure I'm up for the fireplace project yet. Would like to get it converted to all gas and paint inside the box too. Probably best if I wait until after I get my daughter off to college later this summer. Would like to add additional lighting too as Izzy suggests. Can I ask for opinions on furnishing the rest of the room? I've decided against the chairs and media console I referenced at the start of this dilemma. I want to have a transitional-coastal feel to the space, if there is such a thing. I've had my eye on this swivel chair from All Modern in the Classic Smoke fabric. The color pulls one of the tones from my sofa. Two of these to go side by side across from the fireplace. The height of the arms and back are the same as the sofa, so scale should be good....See MoreNidnay
