Help with kitchen tile choice / white oak floors!

Hi all. Please help with deciding what tile to use in our kitchen. We have the option of extending the white oak 5" planks engineered hardwood into the kitchen (which would undoubtedly look better because the layout is more open concept than not). However, with young kids and a lot of cooking and hanging out in the kitchen, I'm not sure we could be gentle with our floors. I'd like to have a light, airy look so trying to stay with light coloured tiles.

This is a new build from a builder that allows semi-customization and these are our choices. We could also just take standard tile from the builder and rip it off later, but this is our last choice as it would be a mess.

The first tile is 18x18 New Byzantine by Olympia Tile non rectified. The others are 12x24 rectified tiles.

It is nice to have a kitchen floor that works well with the wood floor, but it isn't necessary. Only in weird cases (bright orange kitchen brick floor meets purple Brazilian Cherry) do you have to pay attention to BIG colour clashes.

You want to work the tile so that it fits with the kitchen. It will be in the kitchen so the kitchen scheme is much more important than the wood-tile connection.

I'd give the wood a try and use kitchen rugs in hotspots (fridge, sink, stove, any place with chairs).

If you wear it out, it'll be easier to replace with tile than ripping out tile you don't like later. And you just might NOT ruin it!

If sunlight will dwell on the tile for a portion of the day, the darker one will collect and retain heat better--more useful for passive solar--free heat! Even in summer the dark color will take in the heat and tame the air heatup and will release the heat at night when the air is cooler--to even out the day/night disparity in summer rooms. (Plus you should shade those south-facing windows in summer--honeycomb shades? landscaping? overhang? etc.) And in summer you can put a seasonal rug over the dark tile to cut down on heat retention if the floor seems overly warm in places where sunlight touches it.

JMarino, I am not sure yet how dark will we go with floors but I do not think we will go much darker then the color we have. The tile will run in kitchen only. I did not include the original layout we have, but the kitchen is edged by the peninsula you see on the plan (which now is bearing wall) and the other floor that divides kitchen and dining room. Not sure yet what tile we will pick. I think it will depend on the material and color of the counter top we pick. We will be closing window in the kitchen (where the stove is on the plan) but have pretty big window (three in fact and they are on the south side) in the living room. Lots of light there but still we will be closing window in the kitchen. The plan is to run recessed light s, pendant light above peninsula. There will be a hood (most likely chimney like) over range. There will be cabinet over fridge. Plan was to have enclosed hood over the range but that plan just changed today when we bought hood (chimney wall mount hood-SS). So we will need to change that part of plan now.

PF offered to come buff and put another coat, but we objected it since all 4 coats were put within 6.5 hours and we are not sure that previous coats are good. PF also offered to do full refinish but we don't have confidence that PF can do a good job this time. PF himself does not guarantee that second time the finish will work because as he says we do not have perfect humidity conditions. PF says all his employees are certified and did everything within the Bona's guideline. I don't know how 4 coats in 6.5 hours is within Bona's guideline but he is a type of a person that can claim that yogurt is black. The inspector made a mistake and told us that only one person was certified from PF. After we told PF that we talked to female inspector and she said that from our description it looks like PF was at fault, PF tracked down the inspector (we did not disclose inspector's name to PF), called her to correct her that all his employees are certified. In addition PF threatened the inspector to take her to NFWA ethics boards and told her how much money he makes a year and that she should be careful. PF told the inspector that she cannot work for us since he hired her once and that would be a conflict of interest since the inspector has a dislike for him. He is willing to pay $1400 for the damages and walk away if we sign NDA. I told him $1400 would not even cover our accommodation and moving and storage fees of our belongings that we are incurring because of him plus we have to sign a NDA that will free him from any future responsibly of his subfloor and floor install work. We contacted PF and told that it was wrong to track down the inspector and threaten her. PF denied that he threatened the inspector and only called her to correct that all his employees are certified. Also PF tried multiple times to convince us to hire an inspector of his choice for $500. We said we want an independent inspector. He says the inspector we found is a rip off as their fee is $2800.

When you add a finish to white oak it darkens, as do all hardwoods. So a clear finish on your white oak is going to be darker than I think you are looking for. Scandinavian floors are often white washed. I love the Flooring Girl Blog. Has some great information. Wood floor. We’ve had wood in ours for almost 4 years now. I have four crazy kids and two large dogs (St Bernards) and they are just fine.

I have engineered wood in my kitchen, I had solid wood in the previous one for 15 years. 4 kids and a large dog. I have runners in the kitchen but they are mainly for my plantar fasciitis, with the additional benefit of protecting the floors in the most used areas. I would absolutely go with the wood.

I don’t have engineered wood in kitchen - but I have hardwood floors (also in half bath). Dogs/2 children + A LOT of their friends over the years. I am just getting ready to refinish them after 20+ years. I would definitely continue wood floors - the ones you have in photo look beautiful.

I like the first picture, the 18x18 New Byzantine by Olympia Tile non rectified. The question about the style of the kitchen is important, though. What are the cabinets, appliances, and fixtures?

Extend the wood into the kitchen. It will look so much better, and isn't that hard to maintain. If it wears down faster after 10 or 15 years you can re-sand them, or switch to tile then.

Another vote for wood in the kitchen - I've had mine for 25+ years thru 2 kids and 3 dogs. I keep an area rug in front of the sink (for me). I'm just getting it refinished after all this time to change to color during a kitchen remodel. The floor still looks great.

IMO all one flooring in an open plan is much nicer and wood floors have been in kitchens for a very long time and long before all the really great finishes available now so do the same wood floor in the kitchen , a simple thing to wipe up spills as they happen which you need to do with any flooring.

Hardwood in kitchen, absolutely a great choice! We had it in our home with a backyard pool, dogs and kids too.
